This is the second book that I have chosen to read over the summer and its called Teacup Full Of Roses. The major character in this book is named Joe. Joe is the middle son of the family. He has a younger brother named David and an older brother named Paul. Joe is a really good person to David and always helps him out when his parents dont listen to him. He is also really supportive of Paul.
Now Paul is the major minor character. Hes the oldest son in the family and is the favorite of his mother. However, Paul is a drug addict. Hes addicted to Heroin. He had already been in rehabilitation for seven months, but the day he got home, he got hooked again. Before rehab, Paul even sold things from his home to get money for drugs.
Before Paul started drugs however, he was a really good student and was a really great artist. What this book is mostly about is what happens when Paul comes back from rehabilitation and what Joe has to go thorough by believing in Paul. What happens first is Joes at home and his dad is trying to get him to look for Paul because Paul just came home last night and hes gone already and his mom was planning a big dinner for Paul and the whole family. His father Isaac kept forcing him to go, but Joe just kept saying no. Finally, after a million times of asking, Joe said yes.
Joe knew where Paul got al his drugs and it was by a man called Warwick. On his way to Warwick, he bumps into a little friend called Willie. He loves Joes stories and chases after Joe every time Joe comes out so he can tell him a story. Also on his way to Warwick, he bumps into a friend a named Phil. Phils one of Joes best friends.
He tells Joe not to go and that its dangerous. Joe doesnt listen and still goes, but Phil decided not to go with him. He finally got to where Warwick hangs out. His eight bodyguards you might call them were standing there just waiting for trouble.
Joe asked them where Warwick was and they just stalled him by talking about something stupid. Joe could see this was no use so he walked away and one of the people followed him, wanting to pick a fight, but Joe punched him so hard and so suddenly in the stomach that he couldnt even fall. After walking across the next corner he started to run because it was time for night school and Paul always waits for Joe at the bus stop to ask him for money. Joe saw Paul there and asked him if he was drug free and Paul said yes.
Joe also asked him if he was going home and he said yes to that too. They hugged and Joe asked him again if he wasnt doing drugs again, but Paul still said no and said that he looks like he just did heroin because he had a couple drinks with his friends. Joe didnt really believe him, but then Paul said he had an idea. His idea was that since Joe was so good at making up stories, he would make books and Paul would draw the pictures. Joe said he liked the idea and just when he said that the bus came and he got on it. Joe had to leave early in order to make it home for dinner, but decided to leave even earlier to visit his girlfriend Ellie.
While Joe was there, they discussed there plans and what theyre going to do when they get married. Then Joe left to go home only finding his mother fussing about something. Paul didnt come home. Everyone was just sitting there not eating or anything. Joe asked David why he wasnt eating. David said their mother, Mattie, wanted them to wait for Paul.
Joe saw no point of this and just started eating. Joe and his mother had a big argument and everyone was yelling at everyone else and then finally Joe and David got sent to their rooms and then at that second, Paul came back. Mattie was so happy, but when Paul came home, he didnt pay much attention to Mattie and just wanted to fool around with his brothers. Then Mattie told him to eat but Paul said he wasnt hungry because he went out to eat with his friends.
So Mattie put all the food in the refrigerator and made a sandwich for Paul incase he got hungry in the middle of the night. Pauls father noticed something weird about Paul and Paul just said that he went drinking, but Isaac didnt believe him and told Joe to watch his belongings in case Paul wasnt drinking. Then while they were sleeping, Joe had a conversation with Paul. Paul said he wasnt going to make it, but Joe believed that he could stop using heroin and said he could.
Joe asked him what he was on and Paul just said he had some whiskey and smoked some weed. Joe wanted to believe him but he couldnt. The next day, Mattie wouldnt visit Davids school to talk about the senior program where nine seniors get to go to cities all over the U. S. so David found a way to get his mother to go. He went up to his mother while she was at the bus stop and said that Paul was sitting on the basement steps crying.
Immediately Mattie got worried and wanted to go look for him. Then Joe suggested going to Davids school and they did. Once they got there, Joe told his mother that this was all a lie. But they already called David down over the intercom so he was on his way down.
Then Joe said while they were there, they should go to talk to the school about he program that David got selected for. Mattie just left and when David got down only Joe was there. Joe then realized how much she cared about him and David. That night Paul was on drugs again and was in a deep nod which meant he was taken over by the drugs and not aware of his surroundings.
Mattie brought him to the hospital, with Joes help, and asked the nurse what they could do. She said they couldnt do much so they brought him home. It was that night that Joe stopped believing in Paul and wanted to join the navy. He told his mom, and since she was angry with him, she said good.
Joe then wrote a letter to David saying that he was leaving and he is giving him money, and lots of it too. That day, he went to the Navy recruiting office and said he wanted to join the Navy. He filled out some forms and told him to come back in two weeks. Next, he went to his job and quit. Then he went to buy a suit for himself, a piece of jewelry for Ellie, and a dress for his mother. He then went to Ellie's house and said he was going to join the Navy.
Ellie was devastated and asked him if they were still getting married. Joe said yes and comforted her because she was crying. Then he left to go home. When he got home and showed his mother the dress that he got her, all she did was say how ugly the colors were and how she never wears dresses like that. Then his father yelled at her and Mattie agreed to wear it and said sorry. Next, he went to David and talked about the letter and the money.
At first, David couldnt accept it, but then Joe forced him to and told David he would hide it in an old jacket so Paul couldnt find it. Then that night, Joe went out and went for a final car ride with his friend Carolina Murphy. Carolina brought him to a bar that talked a little and then Carolina brought him home. After that, a day passed and it was Joes graduation night. At the end of the graduation, David told Joe that Paul got the money. He said Paul decided to where that old jacket and he found the money.
At once Joe knew he had to find Warwick. Phil decided to go with Joe. Then when they got to Warwick, Joe and Phil got in a big fight with Warwick's bodyguards. Then the kid that Joe punched the other day came out with a gun, aimed for Joe, but David walked in the way and got shot in the head.
Then all was over. If I could change one character in the book, it would be David. I would change him so he didnt want to follow Joe to get the money back. If he didnt go, he wouldnt have had to get shot in the head. What I liked about this book was that it went really fast. By that I mean it was mostly action and not as much conversation like A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthurs Court.
I remember one chapter in the book was just a conversation. The worst part was that the conversation had absolutely nothing to do with anything in the book and was extremely boring. I would definitely recommend this book to other people because I thought it had a great plot, was fast moving, and wasnt too long. I really liked it. Bibliography:
