Emotions are something that is as unexplainable as the Earth itself. We may know what a particular emotion is, but why does it happen and why are they so confusing? How is it that they make us an individual? And why are there physical reactions that come along with them?

Either way, good or bad, they are what make us who we are, and they define us as a species. Emotions in a whole are very complex, just as the human race is. That is why they are so confusing and unexplainable. The Webster's dictionary defines emotions as the affective aspect of consciousness: feelings. In addition, it defines feelings as a subjective response to a person, place or thing. This sense of emotions is what makes us human.

The fact that when we hear or see something with an emotional effect, we uncontrollably give a response as to what we feel about that particular situation. Whether good or bad, we cannot keep what we call emotions, from coming out. We can sure hide them, but they will always be there. We all have these emotions if we are mentally healthy. When we see a battered woman or child, we automatically feel pity or possibly even anger or something else. We see a sick or diseased person and somewhere deep down inside we want to help them although we know we cannot.

But these are only a few feelings of the many that we have. We also experience feeling of great joy and happiness. Such as finding a true love, giving birth to a child, fulfilling dreams and even helping someone in need. This isnt the end of the list either, the number of emotions that we have is an endless list that is forever being added to. Maybe the reason why we feel pity for the battered child is that we all have that same battered child inside us. Not the one that was physically beaten, but the one that was let down or put down by something in their life.

This may be the same for all of our emotions. Maybe we feel them because of something previously experienced in our own lives. That is only one possibility against many others. Why we feel these emotions, no one knows.

All science does know, are the chemical reactions that contribute to our emotions. Because it is so hard to distinguish emotions from person to person considering that each person is very different. We truly cannot say that a certain emotion is a certain thing because there are no words that can be said as to how someone feels because they are just words that have only one meaning and emotions are things that have endless meanings. From the day that we are born, we have certain feelings toward certain things.

Although we have them, we still have to learn what they are. There is no manual that comes with us to tell us what to feel, when it is time to feel something. Even once we have learned what feelings are what, we still are sometimes so overwhelmed with something, that we do not know what to feel or what to think. Everyone is different, and they all have different views on what they are feeling. Because we may know what an emotion is because of what we have learned, but it can be a different physical feeling to every person. For example: one person when they are feeling happy may tingle all over, when another person's stomach is filled with butterflies.

Or when someone is filled with endless rage they may feel as though they are on fire from head to toe, when another person may just break down and cry. Any emotion can be put into this particular situation with an infinite amount of outcomes. There is also the situation where we physically show our feelings. For example, something terrible happens and people will come together to show how much they care. Because people are very good at coming together when the time is needed. Something tragic may happen not directly to someone, but they feel that they need comforting also or that they need to give comforting.

This is something that is also unexplained. It seems as though it would be common sense, but it is not. There could be many ways to somewhat explain this, but the question of " why" will still come about. Because, it can be said that we do this because it is right, but why is it right? On the other hand, it can be said that we would do this because we would want the same done for us, but why would we want the same? These explanations can go on and on forever, and still will never truly be answered.

And, why is it that when we hear startling statistics about something, we are left in a disbelieving state. We will try to ignore it or say, It wont effect me. Even if we are not a part of that particular statistic, we some how feel a connection from it. For example: 1 in every 3 tobacco users will develop lung cancer. It is shocking and we as a species are left with skepticism on our society. We cannot accept the fact that we are letting our world go down the drain, and that it is taking us with it.

Maybe there is a reason why we were created so complex. Maybe it is because we are not supposed to know why we have these emotions and extreme feelings. Maybe it is a test to see what we can and cannot handle. Maybe it is to be left alone and let things continue as they are.

But we simply cannot accept something that we cannot explain and that is another thing that makes us human, and is something we cannot control, the emotion called curiosity. Bibliography:
