Many people tell me that the first impression they get when they meet me is my sense of humor. Sometimes, I dont realize I'm being funny, because most of the things that I say come naturally; but then again, theres a need for to be funny purposely now and then I remember growing up and watching old episodes of Saturday Night Live with my dad. We used to laugh untill we couldnt breathe anymore. Ever since then, I wanted to have that power; the power to make people laugh untill they turned blue. I remember testing my comedy skills out at talent shows and not getting laughs at all; it wasnt as easy as it looked, my jokes actually had to make sense to people besides myself.
I changed some things around and by 10 th grade I was top of my game. I could make a comment in class that would make the teachers have to leave the room because they were laughing so hard. 12 th grade was the ultimate test, if I wanted to secure my class clown position i had to overcome some competition. All of my practice and hard work payed off at the end of the year, I was voted class clown by my peers. I simply enjoyed making people laugh, it was cool that I could win an award for it. I've gotten other awards like MVP for basketball a few times, but I wasnt half as proud as I was of my class clown award.
I remember appling for my job over the summer and letting everyone know I was the class clown at orientation. Maybe untill I have kids, that award will be one of the most If I was living in the 18 th century, my dearest personality trait would be a row boat. The word has really progressed over the years, and i would really like to know how it has come to mean what it does today. I figured that a word describing a way that a person acted or spoke to make people laugh would always be the same, and I was very suprised that it had not always been used in the same manner. I dont think I'd be proud of myself if I won an award voted by my peers to be the best clinker-built pleasure boat. As I read on in the O.
E. D, I saw that the word "funny" also meant queer, odd, and strange. I admit, a few times when no one laughed at my jokes, I experienced all of those adjectives exactly but I dont think I'd want to be recognized as them. It seems that if u were labeled funny 200 years ago, you were in pretty bad shape socially. This definition was also a suprise to me. I almost dont want to think of myself as funny anymore; maybe I want to be humorous, or amusing instead.
