In her poem Mirror, Sylvia Plath writes about a woman who looks at her reflection in the mirror and is not satisfied about what she sees. She does not accept the woman she has become because of aging and her non-established identity. The woman seems not to live up to her high expectations of herself. The first part of the poem is establishing the fact that the mirror has a powerful position over the woman. For example when the mirror describes itself as The eye of a little god, four-cornered; by associating it to a little god there is power, truth, and boundless there. In the second part of the poem it is establishing the fact that the woman can not come to grips that she has aged and that she is no longer a young lady.

For instance when the mirror says In me she has drowned a young girl, and in me an old woman/Rises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish. She has not accepted who and what she has become. It seems that the woman is never quite satisfied and demands a lot of herself. The woman also has let the mirror become powerful over her, because She rewards it with tears.

The speaker in the poem is the mirror. The mirror is being personified because of the way it describes itself with adjectives such as exact, not cruel, truthful, and no preconceptions. Through these human traits the mirror is a living object with just the truth. What I liked about Sylvia Plath s poem was the extensive imagery, such as the woman rewarding the reflection she sees in the mirror with her tears. I believes this poem for me is a reflection of society, because the majority of women who look in the mirror are not satisfied and they think what they see is it and nothing else. I also liked how easy it was for me to interpret the poem, because I think I was able to relate to the poem.
