Joseph Stalin was a very key person to the Soviet Union. He was born in Georgia, a territory south of Russia. Stalin was a very brave individual because he was punished for reading books about revolution and social conditions. Through out Stalin? s life he was a rebel. Stalin was a realistic ruler.
He set high goals for his nation. As in the five year plan when he pretty much doubled the expectations for the electricity, coal, oil, Pig iron, and steel. As Stalin said? to slow down would mean to fall behind. And those who fall behind are beaten. But we do not want to be beaten!
These expectations and dialogue provoked rapid industrialization. (Doc. 2), (doc. 1). Stalin was also a very smart leader. He outmaneuvered Leon Trotsky politically and soon passed Trotsky and gained control of the party bureaucracy. After this Stalin exiled Trotsky to Siberia, so the only political threat to Stalin was gone to another country.
Stalin cared more about the industry then he did about the agriculture. During the first two years of the five-year plan, the coal and steel production began to rise to the level of expectation that Stalin had set. But on the other hand the livestock production had drastically dropped and the wheat production was on a seesaw scale and went up and down. (Doc 3 038; 5) But Stalin was worried about enlarging the agricultural units. Stalin wanted to join the small peasant farms to large collective farms that were technically and scientifically equipped. (Doc 4) In 1937 the industrial output of the USSR was 5. 8 times larger than 1913. By 1937 the Soviet Union was the first country in Europe and the second in the world in the volume of industrial production. But as the five year plan went along the number of crimes rose and the military was more brutal. (Doc 7, 8, 038; 9) Stalin presented himself very well.
His military was very orderly and so were his citizens. Stalin did what every leader should try to do and set high goals for you country. But not all leaders should rely mostly on industrial products. Overall Stalin was a very good leader and I recommend him to all nations except the United States.
