Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743 in Albemarle County, Va. Jefferson attended the College of William and Mary and then studied law with George Wythe. In 1769 he began six years as a representative in the Virginia House of Burgesses. In 1770 he began building Monticello on land inherited by his father. Jefferson married Martha Wales Skelton. They had six children.

Only two of them survived into their adulthood. His wife died on September 6, 1782. Jefferson was the primary author of the Declaration of Independence. He was the first president to be inaugurated in Washington. The purchase of Louisiana from France in 1803 was the most notable act of his administration. s major accomplishment was the founding of the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. He planned it, designed it, and supervised it. On July 4, 1826, the 50 th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson died at Monticello.
