PRAYER IN SCHOOLS Prayer in schools has become a very controversial issue and this topic is of prime importance to many people in America. Prayer has been in public schools since colonial times until 1962, when the United States Supreme Court threw prayer out of schools in the case of Engel v. Vitale. Education in this country is mandatory for all children and public schools must maintain a separation from any religion. Our constitution sets a division between the federal government and religion. Does prayer in schools cross the line between government and religion?
Some think that prayer in schools may violate some students religions. For example, they claim that an atheist may feel uncomfortable and left out in an organized prayer setting, but they have the option of not taking part in such. Muslims do not acknowledge Jesus as God s son and this may offend them also. But what about the majority, of which I am a part, who thinks that prayer can only have a positive impact on the moral values in our society today. With prayer, one feels calmer and more in control and we know that there is a Supreme Being whom has everything under control. If there was public prayer in schools, I am certain that we would not have all these killings and hate groups and all the negativity that is on-going in our schools today.
But, the good news is that schools do allow religious groups to organize and have meetings on school grounds, like any other extracurricular clubs. They are treated like other organizations, but they are not allowed to set aside a special time for prayer at the beginning of the school day. Schools are not allowed to stop a student from praying, as long as it does not disturb or disrupt the class. Students may pray before class, at recess or at any time when class is not in session.
