This poem implies the loss of a husband who is dearly missed by his wife. The basis of this poem is time, everything in it is governed by time. Pound uses time to keep the poems narrative together. He tries to narrate the story of a missing husband keeping it all in time perspective. Many questions are raised about the time however; one of the most dominant questions is has he only been gone 5 months or has Pound purposely corrupted the time scale? It says in the poem that the river-merchant has only been gone for 5 months but there are subtle hints that he has been gone for longer, e.

g. , he keeps mentioning season changes, ? The leaves fall early this autumn, in wind? and? By the gate now, the moss is grown, the different mosses? .

Another hint is the statement? I grow older. ? The question raised by this point is how much older do you grow? These subtle hints and questions however are not enough evidence to support a firm hypothesis. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? The amount of love Pound shows from the River-Merchants wife is phenomenal, it is shown in this passage; ? At fifteen I stopped scowling / I desired my dust to be mingled with yours / Forever and forever and forever. ?

This statement is particularly strong because at such an early age death seems to far off to talk about, this is a very convincing way of saying that you love someone. To be wishing to be with someone forever at the age of fifteen is very strong but Pound could have pushed the point to show how much she misses him. There is no evidence in the poem that he loves her back even half as much. Never once does Pound say that the river-merchants wife is loved back as much as she loves him. She also shows her husband respect, this is shown in the line? My Lord you. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

The images created by Pound in this poem are quite strong. The reader gets images of a happy childhood; ? You came by on bamboo stilts, playing horse? . These images are then darkened as her husband leaves her for Ku-to-yen. ? The monkeys make sorrowful noise overhead? and? [the moss is] Too deep to clear them away! ?

These images show the determination of the garden and imply that she is loosing control of everything eit hout her husband around to help her. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? The most intriguing bit of this poem is that Pound tried to pass this poem off as 8 th century. The reason he did this was because he wanted the poem to sound original so that people would believe in it. This shows Pound? s desire that not all of his poetry was to be classed as modern. He didnt want people to think that just because he wrote in the time of modernist poetry, that all his poems were modern. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

The poem concludes with Pound once again showing the love and devotion the the river-merchants wife feels for the river-merchant. ? And I will come out to meet you / As far as Cho-fu-sa. ? Noone except Pound knows how far Cho-fu-sa is supposed to be but we can only presume it is as far as she can go. Whatever the reason for her husband not being here anymore he is deeply missed and she feels lonely without him. She is desperate for his return and she doesnt try to hide it.

As we don? t know how old she actually is (it says she is five months older than sixteen, but we are not sure if this is correct) we dont know if she will ever see her husband again, but Pound makes the reader feel sorry for her and hope upon the return of her husband.
