In so doing, photosynthesis provides the basic energy source for almost all organisms. Oxygen is extremely important to photosynthesis, which most organisms depend on. Photosynthesis occurs in green plants, seaweeds, algae, and certain bacteria. Chlorophyll is capable of converting active light energy into a form (glucose) that is stored in food.

The initial phase of the process requires direct light; water (H 2 O) is broken down into oxygen (which is released as a gas) and hydrogen. Photosynthesis, in general, is the reverse of respiration, in which carbohydrates are broken down to release energy. Cellular respiration converts sugar into ATP, which is the fuel used by all living things. Plants are the only photosynthetic organisms to have leaves (and not all plants have leaves). A leaf may be viewed as a solar collector crammed full of photosynthetic cells. The raw materials of photosynthesis, water and carbon dioxide, enter the cells of the leaf, and the products of photosynthesis, sugar and oxygen, leave the leaf.

Water enters the root and is transported up to the leaves through specialized plant cells known as xylem. Carbon dioxide cannot pass through the protective waxy layer covering the leaf (cuticle), but it can enter the leaf through an opening (stomata). There are two process of photosynthesis dark reaction and light reaction. In a dark reaction it can occur with or without light. They occur in the stroma of chloroplast. The dark reaction requires ATP which is a product of light reaction. The chemical energy required for the light-independent reaction is supplied by the ATP and NADPH molecules produced in the ight-dependent reaction.

The light-independent reaction is cyclic, that is, it begins with a molecule that must be regenerated at the end of the reaction in order for the process to continue. The light-independent reaction requires the presence of carbon dioxide molecules, which enter the plant through pores in the leaf, diffuse through the cell to the chloroplast, and disperse in the stroma. The light-independent reaction begins in the stroma when these carbon dioxide molecules link to sugar molecules called ribose bisphosphate (Ru BP) in a process known as carbon fixation.
