William Shakespeare was a well-known playwright of the Elizabethan Era. Actually, he is just as well-known now. People who havent heard of Shakespeare, probably heard of one of his famous plays such as Romeo and Juliet or Hamlet. While Shakespeare is well-known for his plays and poems, not much is known about his life. William Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon.
His parents were John Shakespeare and Mary Arden. Shakespeare was the third of eight children, but was the oldest son. The only education Shakespeare was thought to have was at the local grammar school in Stratford. In 1582, Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway, the daughter of a farmer. In 1583, their first child, Susanna, was born. They had only two other children, twins Judith and Hamnet, in 1585.
Hamnet, Shakespeare's only son, died in 1596 at the age of eleven. Information about Shakespeare is not known of between the years of 1585 to 1592. To some people this time in Shakespeare's life is known as The Hidden Years. In 1592, Shakespeare was known to be in London. He started acting and began writing many plays.
Shakespeare worked for The Kings Men acting company. This company became the largest and most famous acting company because Shakespeare performed and worked by this company. In 1604 all of Shakespeare's 154 sonnets were published. Shakespeare worked as an actor, writer, director, and was a stockholder. This made him a very wealthy man.
In 1597, Shakespeare bought New Place, avery large house, for his family to live in. Shakespeare left London in 1611 and retired at New Place. He died on April 23, 1616 at the age of fifty-two. While the cause of Shakespeares death is not known, people believe that Shakespeare knew he was dying. In 1623, some of Shakespeare's friends published his first folio. It included 154 sonnets, 37 plays, and 2 long poems.
Many of Shakespeare's plays became famous and still are today.
