One flew over the Cuckoos nest could be described as a psychological drama about 8 men who are institutionalized for their mental problems. Some were there by choice, some had no choice, but it was often hard to tell exactly why they would want to stay. I thought many of the men were fit to leave as they wanted, in fact almost all of them could. When Mc Murphy brought them into the open world the first time, you could see their confidence grow and their gradual implementation into normal life again.

They became less uptight, managed to have some fun and were able to socialize with each other and the girl on the boat. The group grew together and functioned much like a family from then on. They also didn t care that they were in trouble either. Since all the men in the group needed therapy they would have group sessions with Mrs. Ratchet. Unfortunately though, she wasn t helping them much.

She was always stern and hade this stoic behavior about her. She would be mad or annoyed without knowing it. But she often asked questions to the men in such a way that they could never completely answer them. Mc Murphy actually helped the group much more than Mrs. Ratchet did.

He helped the men come together and gain confidence. He brought them hope by escaping and standing up to the superiors. He showed them what the real world was like and that they could function in it if given the chance. Which brings me to my next point.

Why would anyone want to volunteer to stay in such a place? It was a completely boring monotone place. The nurses spoke with the same emotion and volume no matter what. The rooms were all white, the clothes were all white, and they all had a very specific routine, which couldn t be altered even to watch a baseball game. Slowly the men became more self-sufficient and able to function better with each other and alone. Mc Murphy helped do this by emerging as their leader, since he was mentally able to function normally.

Mc Murphy wasn t actually crazy but may have had other problems in his past to cause his behavior. He actually turned out to be very clever. Another major breakthrough was with the Chief. He was supposedly deaf and dumb, but also turned out to be very normal. I couldn t quite figure out why he wanted to pretend. He seemed to be protecting himself from something, or waiting for the right time.

Mc Murphy turned out to be his motivator and role model. Everything that Mc Murphy was trying to accomplish since the beginning of the movie, the chief completed. He pulled the sink out of the ground and used it too escapes, which was Mc Murphy s initial bet. The one very disturbing thing in this movie was the ethics involved. The electroshock therapy was one of them.

I didn t think you were allowed to fry someone s brains in order to keep them under control. Also the nurses forced everyone to take medicine which they may or may not have wanted or needed. The also don t tell anyone what the medicine is, which is bad ethics. They could put drugs that sedate the person or that are depressants. That is why Mc Murphy tricked the nurses in the beginning by pretending to take the drugs. I think the worst ethical decision is when they took out half of Mc Murphy s brain so that he couldn t have emotions or think.

No one has the right to do that unless it seriously affects the health of the person. The chief put a rightful end to Mc Murphy s life because he basically was dead without his thinking and emotion. One thing I thought was amazing was how well the men coped with their mental illnesses. It would seem almost impossible to me to function almost normally (with the help of drugs) like they do. Particularly in a place like the ward, which is so controlled and monitored. The ward would make normal people go crazy and mentally disabled completely disassociated with any form of life.

Until they had broken out the first time, almost all the men had forgotten what living life was. They had been controlled for so long that they didn t know what to do when they had any sort of freedom and ability to make their own decisions. I thought this film touched on a lot of important points about the mentally disabled as well as ethical problems within any sort of institution. I also decided that it is really hard to determine whether someone is crazy, or faking it or just has other problems.

I ve decided that Mc Murphy was not crazy nor was he dangerous. He was probably normal until he was forced into situations that did not suit him.
