Haymarket Square Riot, confrontation upon police and protesters that took place on May 4, 1886, in Haymarket Square in Chicago. A strike was in progress at the McCormick reaper works in Chicago, and on the day before several men where shot by the police in a riot at the plant. A meeting was called at Haymarket Square on May 4 as protest against police violence by a group of mostly German-born anarchist workers living in Chicago. The police started to try to disperse the meeting, and then a bomb was thrown, which triggered once another gun battle. Seven police officers were killed and many injured even some civilians were to. Eight anarchists that came to the meeting were arrested and got charged with being accessories to the crime, on the floor that they had publicly and frequently advocated such violence.
They were tried and they where found guilty from many charges (the Person that had thrown the bomb was never discovered); seven were sentenced to death and one to prison. Then four were hanged one of them committed suicide, the sentence of two was sentenced to life in prism, and the other one had received a 15 -year term. In 1893 the three in prison war released by the governor of Illinois, John Peter Altgeld, mainly because all the evidence that was showed in the court didnt connect to the defendants. There are good things and bad things about the sixteenth amendment.
The good thing is, when the government takes taxes out your pay check, they use it for a lot of services for the poor, to defend our country, for schools, highways, and to preserve our environment.
