NURTURE VS. NATURE The ultimate question that leads any sociological discussion is the battle between nurture and nature; what is more important to a human development. Both sides have equal and valid arguments, however I believe that the most important influence on a child s development is nurture by others and one self. In Gattaca this question is raised many times, the move even beings with the quote, Consider God s handwork; who can straighten what He hath made crooked? This quote states that you can not straighten what God, or geneticists have created.
To me this idea is false. I think that we learn to become what we are at the end. We could change ourselves and defy genetics without having to change them. People learn from each, and from parents and ultimately ourselves. In the beginning of the film the protagonist is not sure of where he stands and only sees how others treat him, therefore learning from that. The birth of Antoine provides a challenge for Vincent, one which he sets up for himself; to be better than his genetically favorable younger brother.
He is determined to prove to the world that you could train yourself to be above the prejudices of the new society. He cheats to get into Gattaca but has the will power and commitment to do it. By natures course he would have never succeeded, but Vincent was a fighter, he trained himself to become a fighter. Without these developed qualities Vincent Antoine would have died at his predetermined date and never had the will to run away form home. It was that push after beating his brother at chicken that he knew that Antoine was not as strong as he thought and I (Vincent) was not as weak. No genetic juxtaposition of DNA structure can give one what he or she will develop by learning about what s around them and how things in the world really work.
We learn to take our chances with life and make our own decisions. A child left in the cold without guidance will not learn to survive, even a genetically superior one. There s one in a hundred chance that you could even make it I ll take that chance, said Vincent to his father about his chances of survival in space and in life. Therefore, in the end it doesn t matter if you only have one chance, you have to take it and learn form it as Vincent did. What you learn and what you make of what you have is the theory behind the nurture side of the developmental process. Battling against what seems to be impossible to you.
