Napoleon Bonaparte was born in Ajaccio on August 15, 1769. Growing up he lived on the little island of Corsica with his siblings and parents Carlo and Letizia Bonaparte. Napoleon attended a military school in Brienne, France. Napoleon devoted himself to his school and was able to graduate forty-second out of a class of fifty-eight.
He then moved on to another military school in Paris, he spent a year s time there before being assigned to an artillery at the rank of second lieutenant. Next, he was assigned to a garrison in Corsica and stayed there for nearly seven years. While in Corsica, he met someone by the name of Pasquale Paoli a Corsican nationalist, who he came in conflict with. Later, Napoleon and his family were forced out of Corsica to a town called Marseilles. In September of 1793 Napoleon was put in command of an artillery brigade at the siege of Toulon. After successfully completing this mission, he was promoted to general of the brigade and in 1794 he was sent to command a French army in Italy.
Interestingly enough, when Napoleon arrived in France he was put in prison for a brief period because the government suspected that he was involved with Robespierre who had just recently been executed. Three months later he was released and was directed to fight a revolt in Vendee, but he refused that offer and worked in his armies topographic section. Later on in 1795, a riot broke out in Paris, which protested the means of implementing the new constitution made by the National Convention. Napoleon was commanded by Paul Barras to defend the convention and to help support Murat s cannons. He was victorious in that feat. Following that year Napoleon started several missions into Italy, planning to attack the Sardinian and Austrian armies.
He killed off the Sardinian army in under a month and then immediately moved on to the Australians. By using excellent strategy, Napoleon got rid of them by the next February. After returning to France, the new government known as the Directory suggested that Napoleon invade Britain. I n 1798 Napoleon set sail with over 35, 000 troops and 350 ships and easily defeated the armies in Egypt and claimed Cairo and Alexandria. The second time he returned to France, Napoleon accepted an appointment as one of the three consuls, the other two being Sieyes and Ducos.
Napoleon was able to take position of the first consul chair, this action easily disposed of the Directory, and then made themselves the new leaders of the government. Napoleon wanted control over everyone and everything, and in his position he was qualified to do this. Napoleon controlled the members of the council of state, government officials, and judges of the courts. At this time Napoleon had supreme power of the land, and would continue ruling for a while longer. This is how Napoleon rose to power during the French Revolution.
