How can the justice system be unjust? Does it treat people unfairly because of their strange acts? Acting strange can be used against a person even though it is unfair to dot hat. In Albert Camus' The Stranger, the character Mersault acts in a strange manor throughout the Mersault acts strange throughout the book, which makes people judge him. At his mother's funeral, his behavior was so strange that the people started to talk about him.
How he didn't want the coffin open, and was drinking and smoking in front of it was strange. Mersault also notices everything around him, like when the hornets were flying around and how hot it was at the home. He notices everything and watches everything except his mother's coffin. Mersault is also acted strange the day after his mother's funeral. The next day he sat in his bed and then wanted to take a swim. He ran into a friend Marie on his way.
They swam together and talked during the day, and at night they went back to Mersault's house and had a one night stand. Usually he would got to the Celeste's but to avoid the questioning about his mother's funeral he didn't go. Mersault was also known for being strange because of the people he was friends with. He was friends with the neighborhood pimp Raymond. Mersault went along with everything Raymond said, like the time Raymond wanted to get back at his girlfriend for playing dirty.
He told Mersault that he wanted him to write a letter, "a real stinker" (page 40). So Mersault did it, like he did everything else. Mersault has no sense of commitment to anyone or anything. He only is interested in things that happen at the moment. He does things without thinking first, like his affair with Marie, friendship with Raymond and comforting Salamano. He thinks it is easier to say yes than no, but never lies to cover himself up.
The prosecutor says that he doesn't have a soul, because he is a heartless killer. He thinks Mersault is heartless because he didn't cry at his mother's funeral, because why wouldn't you cry at your own Mersault is strange because it is like he doesn't love anybody. He said that he was fond of his mother and that he loved the way people loved their mothers. He says that he doesn't really love Marie but will marry her if she wants. Love isn't important to him and he doesn't care. It looks like in the book that Salamano loves his dog more than Mersault loves his girlfriend or his mother.
It is like he is scared to love someone because he doesn't want tog et hurt. It is also strange how he does not believe in God. People look at him bad in prison because how he attacked the chaplain. It is bad for Mersault to not believe in God and an afterlife because then he has no hope. Mersault seems to have so many bad things about him, that it is surprising that he never lies. Even when he is on trial and the prosecutor asks him questions, he answers with the truth even though it makes him look bad.
This is very strange because even the most honest person would lie to make themselves look better in front of a jury especially if they were on trial for murder. Always watching and observing situations is another thing that makes Mersault strange. Even though he can't even think about his mother or his girlfriend or killing someone, he always takes the time to notice every little thing around him and thinks about little things that don't involve him while bad things are happening to him. Like in jail he thinks about other women, and not Marie who he was in a serious relationship with. He also has no remorse for anything that he did. Because Mersault is the main character of the book, we look at him in many ways.
You try to feel bad for him sometimes but he is so different that you can't. He cares about little things like running and swimming, and not other important things like his mother, spending time with his girlfriend, and changing his job. He does not talk about his past, only the present. That is all he cares about. He is very quiet and doesn't really talk to people, but he doesn't judge them. This is good sometimes except he doesn't care that Raymond is a pimp and beats his I think that Mersault was weird and that he should have done things different in the book, but I don't think that he was really a bad person.
He just wanted to do what he felt like doing and didn't see a problem in that. He was just a person who didn't like to get all emotional about things, and he takes action against people who make him mad. The only thing that he shouldn't have done was kill the Arab guy. I think that he should have pleaded insanity because the heat made him go crazy. I don't think that he was dangerous to society like the prosecutor said, and even though he could have lied about things he didn't he always tells the truth even if it hurts him. Mersault is not really a bad person, he is just very strange.
