In Shakespeare s Much Ado about Nothing, he shows the many different qualities of his characters and he uniquely involves four major characters in the web of love. The play is set in Messina, Italy, a small province facing the Straits of Messina, in northeastern Sicily, at the estate of the governor of Messina, Leonato. Don Pedro, Prince of Arragon, Don John, his brother, Borachio his servant, Benedict, a young lord, and Claudio his best friend are all returning from war, and have been invited to stay with Leonato for a month. In this comedy Shakespeare shows the love and human compassion between two couples who take completely different paths to reach the same goal which is making the connection between inward and outward beauty.

It has been stated that the love between Beatrice and Benedict is stronger than the love the love of Claudio and Hero. Well that statement will be proven correct throughout this essay because even though Claudio and Hero are learning to love each other they lack the chemistry that Beatrice and Benedict have. Benedict is a smart, good-looking, and funny guy. He is very witty, and always has a response to anyones comments.

For example, when he is talking to Beatrice, he always has a comment to finish off the conversation. He also doesnt like the idea of marriage. Benedict thinks that marriage leads to the trapping of men. When he hears about Claudio getting married, Benedict thinks that Claudio is crazy, because Benedict feels that marriage is going to change the way Claudio lives.

He is also very stubborn. He never wants to give into other peoples ideas, and that is why he doesnt want to give into the idea that marriage could be a good thing in a persons life. Beatrice is a character very similar to Benedict. She is a very independent person, and doesnt want to rely on anyone for support.

She also is very smart. She enjoys reading poetry, and thinks about things a lot. She also is against marriage. During one conversation, she says that she would rather die than get married. Another characteristic of Beatrice is that she is very emotional.

She often changes her mood all of a sudden for no apparent reason. Also, Beatrice keeps many of her feelings inside her. Sometimes she is angry but wont show it, because she always has to feel strong and look like she doesnt need anyone. The traits and characteristics of Beatrice and Benedict is what brings them together, and also what keep them separate. Beatrice and Benedict are separated because, they always think that they have to be independent, and not need each other. Another factor that keeps them from coming together is that they always fight with each other.

In trying to seem strong, they are actually fighting with each other, and hurting each others feelings. The final thing that keeps Benedict and Beatrice from coming together is that they both think that marriage is a stupid institution. If neither of them want to get married, it would be very hard for them to maintain a relationship. Some factors bring Benedict and Beatrice together though. First, they never got bored of each other. Because they disagree on many issues, and are both able to argue well.

Secondly, Benedict and Beatrice have very similar personalities. They both are strong and independent. They both are against marriage, and both are happier alone, or so they think. In reality both of them are lonely and with a little help they realize that love and marriage are great things. At the end of the play Benedict proposes to Beatrice in front of everyone which shows they have come a long way from their initial love fights. Claudio is pretty much the complete opposite from Benedict.

Claudio is a very uncertain person who always needs the help and approval of the prince. Claudio also is very believing person in that anything that is said he will believe and follow his first response rather than analyze the situation. Hero is shown to being a very innocent and caring character. She is also very doubtful and is seen to be a follower rather than a leader. It can be said that the relationship between Claudio and Hero is a love at first sight where the only love for each other is the physical attraction and the wealth. A possible quotation of Claudio can be noted when after describing his attraction of Hero to Benedict, he asks Don Pedro, Hath Leonato any son, my lord?

Don Pedro replies that Hero is his only heir. (I. i. 262) An interpretation of this might be that Claudio s attraction to Hero was rooted in a pursuance of the love of Heros wealth, masked by her outward beauty. Although at the end of the play it is shown that Claudio does love Hero in his heart when he is exposed to her innocence. In short the relationship between Hero and Claudio is not healthy because of their insecurity and their lack of action and communication which leaves them open to trickery and pain.

As for the relationship between Beatrice and Benedict they are overconfident and very proud but they do trust each other and they have built a mysterious relationship throughout their years of bickering. Love is shown to be a very complicated aspect in many people s lives. Although, in this play Shakespeare shows us not only how tough it is to maintain love, but that it is even harder to realize who you love and why. Love is not a physical attraction; it is a connection of one person s heart to another s and both Claudio and Hero and Benedict and Beatrice came to this realization by the end of the play.

But the love between Beatrice and Benedict is stronger because they not only have the connection, they have the trust and communication. Both couples also learned different lessons of love. Claudio and Hero learned that trust and communication is extremely valuable. And Benedict and Beatrice learned that words aren t as strong as feelings and attraction. It has therefore been proven that the reason why the relationship between Benedict and Beatrice is stronger is because they have developed trust and communication rather than maintaining a relationship based on physical attraction. 334
