The Media s Corruption on Society When I woke up this morning, I turned on my television to watch the morning news, but there was a commercial on. It was an advertisement for Herbal Essence shampoo. The lawyer, who is a beautiful brunette woman, whips out a bottle of shampoo and starts washing her hair. While cleaning her hair, she moans wildly, as if having an orgasm. As she is doing this five muscular guys with their shirts off are singing, she s got the urge. The next commercial was for the movie American Pie and it shows a girl in her unbuttoned shirt and underwear lying on some guy s bed saying, you bad boy you.
Another commercial was for the television show Friends; the clip shows Phoebe at a massage parlor with some guy with only a towel on and the advertisement guy saying: tune in to the next Friends at 7: 00 to see what happens to Phoebe at work. I turned off the television set after becoming disgusted at the sexual tactics they were using. I then decided to read my magazine that I just received. The first page I saw was an advertisement for Abercrombie and Fitch. It depicts a woman wearing a bikini top and a very short skirt standing on a table while four men all around her stare at her as if she was a cheap piece of meat. The media is corrupting today s society with their deceiving depictions of sexual behavior.
We examine and hear these displays on magazines, movies, radio, and television. In television sitcoms it seems that everybody is having sex. For example, in the television show Beverly Hill 90210 one character, Donna, was a virgin in this sitcom for five seasons, but she eventually had sex with her boy friend, David. In this and many other shows they try to tell you if you have sex, you will be popular and fit in with everybody else.
For example, in the sitcom Married with Children, one of the main characters in this show is Kelly Bundy who is portrayed as being one of the cool kids in school. The main reason why she is cool and getting a lot of dates is because she is very promiscuous. In many of the episodes Kelly wears dresses that are way too short on the bottom and have too much cleavage showing on top. She is with a different guy every week and sleeps with a lot of them. Another show Friends, which is about the lives of six people living in New York, shows that they too are all having sex. For example, in one show Monica sleeps with a cook, who works with her, because he tricked her into having sex with him by telling her that he has not been able to have sex since his wife left him.
This gives kids the impression that they too should be having sex because these characters that they all look up to are all having sex. Even on the radio we hear songs from rap artists talking about how they like having sex, how much fun it can be, and how they are doing it. In one song, Suck My Dick by rap artist Lil Kim says, All I wanna do is get my pussy sucked nigga. Girls who look up to this rap artist will think, hey if that s what she wants then I want that too. Song after song you hear about sex. In Foxy Brown s song, Get Me Home, she sings, I thought for a minute and then my mind went. Sex all around the car isn t it ironic? After listening to these lyrics long enough listeners will eventually be brainwashed. There are also plenty of movies out there that also depict these irresponsible behaviors. American Pie is one of these movies.
In this movie five teenagers make a pact to help each other lose their virgin ities before they graduate from high school. This movie portrays that being a virgin is a bad thing and they have to lose it or they will not be cool. In one of the scenes all the girls want to ask this guy out because he started a rumor that he had a very big penis. This might give viewers the impression that everybody is into sex. At the end of this movie they all end up loosing their virgin ities. Once again stating that everybody is having sex.
In another movie Scream, Sydney, which is the only girl who is still a virgin, eventually got tricked into having sex with her boyfriend so he could kill her. To viewers who watch this movie they might see it as hey everybody eventually has sex one way or another. The magazines we read contain many sexual innuendoes that many readers will only see it one way. For example, in the Luna Di Luna wine ad it has a picture of two guys and two girls drinking wine, laughing, and having fun. At the bottom of the ad it states, Get some.
This ad makes it seem as if these people in the ad are eventually going to have sex after this party. In another ad by Curves cologne it shows two guys and three girls hugging each other, touching each other, and laughing. At the bottom of the ad it states, See where it takes you. Readers who see this ad may see it differently because this ad makes it seem as if these beautiful models are about to have sex with these men.
This ad gives readers the impression that everybody wearing this cologne is having sex. In the end we see that the media is corrupting society by influencing them to have irresponsible sexual behaviors. It is almost impossible not to be influenced by the media because they are everywhere you look, including television, radio, movies, and magazines. These are only a few of the media s corruptive influences. In one way or another they show and tell that it is o. k.
to have sex because everybody else is doing it. Even in the movies, like American Pie, they depict being a virgin as an embarrassment and that you need to get rid of it as soon as possible or at least by the time you get out of high school. With all of this weighing against society it is hard not to be influenced.
