Macbeth s Redeeming Qualities Had Macbeth chosen the path of good over that of evil he would be a very good king. He possesses everything required to be a good king but instead makes a few poor decisions, which caused him to be seen as an evil king. Despite Macbeth s evil he is still an admirable character and possesses redeeming qualities such as his extreme loyalty, his conscience for his actions and his ambition to succeed. Macbeth s most important quality is his loyalty towards King Duncan. He shows this loyalty by being a captain in Duncan s army. Macbeth is a fearless warrior winning many battles for his country.

In recognition of Macbeth s loyal service, Duncan gives him the title Thane of Cawdor. What he hath lost, noble Macbeth hath won (Shakespeare 1. 3. 78). Macbeth thinks his actions are merely his duty towards his country and does not want to be compensated for them. This is seen when Macbeth insists that the title Thane of Cawdor is not necessary. The service and the loyalty I owe, in doing it, pays itself. (Shakespeare 1. 4. 25 - 26) In order for Duncan to present the new title, he went to Macbeth s castle to celebrate. When Duncan arrives at the castle, he is full of praise for his loyal subject.

Conduct to mine host: we love him highly, and shall continue our grace towards him. (Shakespeare 1. 7. 37 - 38) Macbeth is very loyal to his king and his country. This loyalty is very much appreciated and he was rewarded accordingly. Being loyal was not Macbeth s only good quality. He also had a conscience for his actions.

Having a conscience for one s actions is a very important quality. Throughout the play, we constantly see that Macbeth has a conscience towards his actions. In most cases, he realized what he had done, be it right or wrong. Conscience is exhibited after he kills Duncan but can t stand to look at the body.

I am afraid to think what I have done; look on t again I dare not. (Shakespeare 2. 2. 66 - 67). This lets us see that after Macbeth killed Duncan his conscience will not let him look at what he has done. He also realized what he had done could not be changed and it will affect him for the rest of his natural life. We also see Macbeth s conscience prick at him in different forms of hallucinations. An example of this in Shakespeare s play is Is this a dagger, which I see before me, the handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee (2. 1. 44 - 45).

During this soliloquy, Macbeth thinks he sees a dagger that he will use to kill Duncan. The dagger is covered with blood. This shows that his conscience is causing him to think about what he is going to do. As he thinks about what he s going to do his conscience comes up and reminds him of the consequences of his act. Another type of hallucination surfaces after Macbeth has his friend Banquo killed by two murderers. Thou canst not say I did it: never shake thy gory locks at me. (Shakespeare 3. 4. 61 - 62).

After Banquo is killed Macbeth goes to sit down at the table where his guests have gathered for the feast. The table is full because Banquo s ghost is sitting in his seat. The fact that Macbeth sees Banquo s ghost sitting at the table shows that his conscience is pricking at him again. He is beginning to regret what he has done and realizing the consequences and repercussions. Even though Macbeth does some very evil things throughout the course of the play, it is important to remember that he realizes what he did and what the repercussions will be. Perhaps the only reason why he did what he did was because he felt very strongly about certain things and followed his ambition to succeed.

Once Macbeth formulated a goal it would be very hard to stop him from achieving it. This is a very good quality although he sometimes uses it in a negative way He is an ambitious man and it was evident on more than one occasion. This was evident after Duncan named his eldest son Malcom Prince of Cumberland. The Prince of Cumberland! That is a step, on which I must fall down, or else o elea, for in my way it lies (Shakespeare 1. 4. 55 - 57).

During this aside Macbeth says that Malcom is now an obstacle he must surmount in order to be crowned. His ambition aids him in finding a way to prepare for this inevitable problem. Had he no ambition he would have just decided not to solve the problem and simply call it quits. This quality is also visible again during the play.

Before he decides to kill Duncan, he wonders why he is going to do this. I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition, which o er leaps itself, and falls on the other (Shakespeare 1. 7. 25 - 28). This hints that the only reason why Macbeth is going to kill Duncan is because of his ambition. His ambition to become King of Scotland.

He commits some evil deeds but it is only because he wants so desperately and deeply believes that he should be king. Had he not done what he did to become king, Macbeth would not have become the admirable character that he is. Once Macbeth obtained the throne, he continued more than ever to follow the path of evil. He could have been a very good king had he followed the good path once more. Macbeth was by no stretch of the imagination a good king. He could have been, had he not kept on committing evil deeds.

It is thought that Macbeth could have been a good king because he possessed many good qualities that would have assisted him. For example he was a very loyal subject to Duncan before the inevitable as we saw in the previous paragraphs. This loyalty could have been passed down to his subjects. He could have told the people of Scotland the truth, listened to their ideas and fought for what they wanted. Macbeth was also a very ambitious character.

This is visible in previous paragraphs. He could have used his ambition to aid him once he became king. He would not have rested until his subjects were satisfied and content. There was also a sense of love given off by Macbeth toward his wife Lady Macbeth. He was always kind with her and treated her properly. We see this in the way he reacted with her when he returned home from a battle (Shakespeare 1. 5).

Macbeth s love could have been returned to all the people in his kingdom and everyone would have lived happily with very little conflict. With the qualities above, it is possible to see that Macbeth could have been a fair and loving king had he chose the right path. Throughout the play, many of Macbeth s qualities both good and bad are presented. It must be understood that the only reason why he is bad is because his lifelong dream was to be king.

The only way for him to become king was to follow the evil path. Despite this evil, Macbeth is still an admirable character. He was very loyal to his King Duncan, he had a conscience for his actions and he had great ambition to achieve his goals. It is also very evident that Macbeth could have been a good king had he made the right decisions. However, this was not the case and Macbeth paid the ultimate price in the end.
