Living In Alcoholic Home For many young Americans, this is simply a way of life. Alcoholism has become such a widespread problem that it seems to be an acceptable illness. Statistics show that approximately 1 / 3 of the high school population in the United States today either lives directly under the roof of an alcoholic parent or has an absent alcoholic parent. Alcoholism is a disease that can be passed on to your children. It is a disease you can inherit from your parents. It is a disease that will rob you of your future.
Alcoholism is a disease that shows no mercy and is totally non-discriminatory. To raise the communities awareness of the widespread problem of alcoholism, I feel that each high school require a one day visit to an inpatient alcoholism treatment center before the student is allowed to graduate. The school should also provide the opportunity for the student body to hear the first hand story of a recovering alcoholic. There is help for this disease, however, will it ever be some- thing than can be controlled by medication?
I think not. It can be avoided by abstinence, however, it cannot be cured. Education is the best hope our young people have to avoid this life crippling disease.
