Nettie and Celie are sisters. that are faced with unusual circumstances. Sisters are normally encouraged to be close, but they are forced to separate. Despite their unfortunate circumstances they have established a love for each other that will never be broken. As sisters they strengthened and encouraged each other. They are two very different people because of the way they are treated, but they are also similar because they have a lot of the same opinions and beliefs.
I think Nettie and Celie are two completely different people on the outside, but on the inside they are very much alike. They are both very strong women that have had to deal with a lot of problems within their lives. It is obvious that Nettie is strong because she stands up for herself. Although Celie does not outwardly show how strong she is, it is also obvious that she is very strong. She has somehow coped with being raped by the two men that were supposed to love her the most.
She has also had her own children taken away from her for no reason. Anyone who can survive after being treated that way has to be very strong Nettie and Celie are different in many ways. Celie lets everyone push her around, but Nettie will not let anyone tell her what to do. Nettie is much more attractive than Celie, which allows her to have a better life. Celie thinks that her life is not very important and that she deserves the treatment she gets. Nettie knows that she is just as important as everyone else is and that she has the right to defend herself against anyone including men.
It is unfair to Celie that she can not live a life as good as her sisters because she is not very attractive. They are also different because Nettie had the opportunity to go to Africa and experience a completely different culture. Celie had to stay in Georgia to take care of her husband and his children. If she would have had the opportunity to get out and see other people she might have had a much better outlook on life. Nettie and Celie are similar because they love each other more than anything else. The strong love for each other developed when they were children because they did not have anyone else to turn to.
They never lost their love for each other even when they were separated for many years. A love like that makes anyone realize that they are important, and that it is alright to feel good about yourself. Celie always envied Shug and liked to look at her body. When Shug started talking to Celie more they seemed to develop a special bond. They started talking to each other more and more and before too long they became friends.
Celie slowly started opening up to Shug about her personal life. Celie was really surprised to find out that Shug enjoyed sex. Celie told her that she did not like having sex at all and that he just did it to her when he felt like it. Shug explained to her that it was supposed to be something for them both to enjoy. Shug taught Celie how to masturbate and told her that she should get the same kind of pleasure when she sleeps with her husband. Shug and Celie became very good friends and built a special bond.
They make each other feel like they are important and that they are loved. Shug makes Celie feel good because she gives her love that she had only gotten from Nettie. Celie also makes Shug feel important because she respects her for her opinions and loves her as a person. Most people did not like Shug, and the ones that did only knew her physically.
Although Shug and Celie have developed a very special bond, I do not think Shug replaces Nettie in Celie's life. They do have a very special spiritual and sexual relationship, but Celie has enough room in her heart for her sister and her new best friend. I think Celie is very lucky to have a friend like Shug because she can tell her everything that she was too afraid to tell anyone else. Celie might have never made it if she did not have Shug, but she will never be able to replace Nettie. Despite all their differences Nettie and Celie had a relationship that was probably more loving than normal relationships between sisters. I am really impressed with their strength to carry on throughout the book.
Celie and Nettie are both very courageous women that are blessed to have each other to depend on. I think they gave each other the strength and a reason to go on every day. Bibliography:
