A very long time ago there were two neighboring tribes. They were called the Chippewas and the Navajos. These two tribes have been fighting over land and food for years. Although, it wasnt the tribe, some of the Native Americans in the tribes would try to keep peace among them. Part of the Navajo tribe tried convincing the rest of them that all these little fights wont solve anything. The leaders of the tribe took it differently and decided that they would have to some how kill or hurt the Chippewas they had a secret meeting with out the men who tried to keep peace between them so they wouldnt try to stop them.
As they stood their pondering what they were going to do one of the men stood up and said they should have the evil spirits make the other tribe ill by poisoning their food. All the men thought that it was a great idea and agreed. In order for them to bring the evil spirits to poison their food they would have to do a dance and play music around a fire. When the next day arrived all the Navajos were anxious to see what was going to happen. As they stood their watching the Chippewas eat their food they started noticing them all get sick. The leaders of the Navajos were happy, thinking finally they were going to have all the food and land they wanted without worrying about the Chippewa tribe.
But when the peacemakers of the tribe realized what was going on they had to figure out a way to help them. They thought of bringing the good spirits down to heal all the men so they danced around the fire hoping the good spirits would help them. So after their dance they turned and realized that it worked. All the men were feeling better and thats where they thought of medicine.
