While walking down the driveway of my grandfather s house one can see the one story ranch with out bushes or trees to block ones view. The long drive way leads to the garage, which is on the far right of the house. A path separates from the driveway and leads to the left to the front porch. This path passes along old knee high bushes that surrounds the porch.
The bushes only have a small gap in them to let the path go up to the porch in alignment with the front door. The several chairs on the porch look warn from many years of use. There are two large windows on each side of the door. Under these windows are two large rectangular flower pots that hold fake flowers. If you look under these perfect flowers you will see tiny army men still lined up in fighting formation, as if waiting to go into battle. As you enter my grandfather s house all your senses are awakened to the sights, sounds, smell, and overall feel of the house.
As one enters my grandfather s house ticking clocks are heard. There is a large grandfather clock to the left of the door. Across the large room just inside the door are three distinct rooms. The rooms are not separated by walls but by imaginary lines that are formed by the arrangement of the furniture. These three rooms include: the dining room, formal living room, and the den.
The fire place stands out most of all on the far end of the room. It is all brick with a dark wood mantle. The mantle holds an antique clock and several old black and white photos in decorative frames. The clock with is just below the large hunting gun.
The gun looks as if it has never been shot, but is ready to be taken down and used. The clock has several small pieces of wood underneath each of the legs, a sign of someone trying his hardest to get the clock level. Next to the fire place is an old rocking car with a cushion in it. In this chair you will most likely find my grandfather sitting. The area around the chair has a smell of smoke. The smell comes from the extensive collection of pipes.
Behind the rocking chair in a large self with many pictures of family. Each shelf represents one of my grandfather s children. There is a television in the room, compared to the rest of the room it looks out of place because it is the only modern technology in the home. Even the phone is the old rotary phone that takes a while to dial. The formal living area is only for special guests. The furniture in this area still looks brand new because of it lack of daily use.
The couch is upholstered is an ivory white. Most of the time one can not see it because it is hidden under a bed sheet that is spread over it. There is also a glass case that hold valuable figurines that my grandmother has collected over the years. The are displayed in a way that shows she is very proud of them. The dining area has a large table with a silver candle stick holder on it. The table is always set with the china even if guest or family is not expected.
The china cabinet holds many beautiful dishes, glasses, and other items used for a formal dinner Through a door on the left side of the den is the kitchen. It is a small kitchen. Every thing looks to be put away except for the items in the sink. This room always has a different smell to it, it all depends on what was cooked that day. The refrigerator is covered by all sorts of magnets. Each holding something important, like a loved ones phone number or a mouth watering recipe.
The small kitchen table is covered with: envelopes, papers, place mats, salt &# 038; pepper shakers, and a small bowl of fruit. The table is in front of a large window that overlooks the large back yard. On the other end of the house there is a small bedroom, the master bedroom and a bathroom. The small bedroom is cluttered with small shelves filled with family albums and old books.
It has a small green hide a bed that sits against the back wall. The master bedroom is large with several extravagant pieces of furniture. The room seems as if no one ever goes in it because the bed is always made, nothing is on the floor, and nothing is out of place. The bathroom is decorated in a sea side theme.
There are sea shells around the sink and beach pictures on the wall. The shower curtain has a beach with the sea in the background printed on it. The towels are done in light colors. Over all the house has a feel to it that makes it feel like a home. The one thing most people notice about the house is the sound of ticking clocks and how neat and tidy the house is. The house is full of life and makes anyone feel welcome in it.
My grandfather s house is always a great place to go. Everything seems to move at a slower pace there. There are many memories and lots of stories about everything in the house.
