Dont Judge Until You Know Stereotypes are conventional, formulaic, and oversimplified conceptions, opinions, or images of certain groups of people in society. Many of these stereotypes are very accurate descriptions of persons belonging to these groups. However, stereotypes are sometimes inaccurate, often negative, and always dangerous. Some of the groups affected by these bad stereotypes are the disabled, the elderly, teenagers, and welfare recipients. The public normally thinks of disabled people as unable to do many of the things that most normal people can do. After all, the definition of disabled is deprived of capability or effectiveness, especially impaired of physical abilities.
However, many people with disabilities can hold down jobs, handle responsibilities, and carry on quite normal lives. These people focus on their abilities and dont let their limitations hinder them. The elderly, although being beloved members of society, often face many stereotypes. They are the neglected sector of the fashion industry, stereotyped by blue hair and polyester pantsuits. No one ever wants to be stuck driving behind an elderly person, especially if they are in a hurry because of their slow driving. Teenagers can be stereotyped in many different ways.
Since adolescence is the time when most young people are finding themselves, they can fit into many different categories. Many people think of teenagers, in general, as irresponsible troublemakers who are not serious about anything. If raised well, a teenager can really be a credit to society by working, volunteering, and helping out in the community. The final and probably worst stereotyped group would be recipients of welfare. People on welfare are often considered to be lazy. Those of them who dont work and use the system are the lazy ones who give the others the bad stereotype.
These people waste taxpayers dollars. People who experience layoffs, single parents who need extra income, and people who for reasons beyond their control can not work, are the only people who should receive welfare. These are only a few examples of mistakes in stereotypes. If someone judges a person before they get to know him or her, that person could be making a serious misjudgment. You cant always judge a book by its cover.
