Major Character: The major character in this book is Jerry Renault, a freshman. He refuses to sell chocolate during the annual school sale. When the Vigils, get involved, Jerry? s life gets pretty bad.
He gets beaten and abused. His mother died of illness, and following her death, Jerry? s father decides to move to a new apartment. Jerry decides he should be a part of something, so he goes out for the football team. He proves to be a good and worthy player. Setting: This book is set in a small catholic all-boys school in Boston.
The main character? s home isn? t described very well. Plot: Jerry decides not to participate in the annual chocolate sale. The Vigils, a secret school society in charge of the sale, decide this is a threat to the organization, and Jerry becomes an outcast. He is abused and beaten, but still stays strong.
My Reaction: This book was well written and made me think of how cruel people can be and how people can be mistreated. The author set a mood, a sad and dark mood that is kept throughout the book. Even scenes that were meant to be funny or cheerful, a sense of darkness filled the page. It does make the book depressing, but I liked it.
