When one says the phrase, life goes on, we can probably assume that they have been faced with some type of tragedy that has affected how they lived. This phrase might create situations where life after the misfortune is more bearable for the person affected and the friends and family of the person. If The Crossing had been written through the eyes of Billy Parham, we probably would have read the phrase life goes on over and over again. Billy was the type of person that would experience something, and without any hesitation, he would move on as though the event couldnt stop him. When his wolf died, we all saw how short his suffering was and how quickly he went on. Unfortunately, Billy was faced with the tragedy of his parents deaths immediately afterwards.
This trend continued throughout the novel and it came as a shock to realize how much Billy could stand before he would show any emotions. Billy was a strong teenager that couldnt be stopped by hunger, death, persecution, or lack of motivation. He would be the ideal person to have by your side, because he is someone that could help in any situation. Billy's personality is one desired by most people today. We all desire to be able to live our lives unaffected by the tragedies we encounter.
The only way possible in most of our minds to achieve this, is by forgetting about the events and pushing our emotions to the side. As we saw in the last page of The Crossing, most people, like Billy, will break down in the long run if bombarded by an accumulation of unexpressed emotions. Billy broke down and had absolutely no one to share his feelings with which is a horrible thing to have happen. He could have had the old yellow dog with him, but he wasnt going to take the chance of having the dog die on him, and have that add to the list of tragedies that filled his life. The theme of this novel essentially is life goes on. Billy's personality expresses this theme extremely well and that is why we all can in some way relate to his situations.
We all know what it is like to lose a loved one, to have to move away from home, to travel great distances to find what we are searching for, or to try to get back things the way they used to be.
