Charles Dickens Charles John Huffam Dickens is one of the most popular and greatest English novelists of all time, but he was once recognized as a great Victorian novelist. By creating some of the most famous characters in English Literature, he also creates scenes and descriptions of places that his readers will not soon forget. He has a great understanding for young people and towards humanity. Standing up for what he believes, he sympathizes and assists poor and helpless children, but in doing so, mocked and criticized the selfish, the greedy and the cruel.

Dickens was born on February 7, 1812 in Portsmouth, England. When he was nearly two years old, he and his family moved to London. Charles father, John Dickens, worked very hard to keep food on their table by being a clerk for the navy. John spent time in prison for going into debt, but even when he was free, he still lacked the money to adequately support his family. When Charles was twelve, he acquired a job in a London factory pasting the labels on bottles of shoe polish, and even though he did this for only a few months, the memories would remain with him for the rest of his life.

While his life was very chaotic, he attended school on and off until he was about fifteen. Still, one of his favorite pastimes was reading. Some of the English writers that influenced his career were Henry Fielding, Tobias Smollett, and William Shakespeare. But in his success with being an author, he used his life experiences in writing his novels.

In the late 1820 s he became a reporter for a newspaper. In the beginning of his reporting career, he was assigned dull law cases and debates in Parliament. But not realizing it, these cases and debates enhanced his very vivid imagination and increase his ability to write swiftly and distinctly. In 1836, Dickens wrote his first novel and called it Sketches by Boz and it consisted of articles he wrote for the London Evening Chronicle and the Monthly Magazine. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, which describes the humorous adventures and misadventures of a group of slightly quaint characters in London and the English countryside helped Dickens win his first literary achievement. It was published in monthly parts between 1836 and 1837.

With the very sharp turn of events for Dickens, he found himself very famous and he remained so until death.
