In the book Catcher in the Rye, by J. D. Salinger, Holden Cantfield portrays the catcher and needs to be caught because of his delusional state of mind. He portrays himself as a saint, or a do-good that is out to save the world from evil.
Holden is delusional, possibly insane and can be harmful to others. He sure doesn t seem to be nice or kind to people. The only people he liked in his miserable life are dead, like his brother. The general tone of his character seems to spark indifference and anger.
Angry at life he punched out a window in a garage and broke his hand. It is just this type of behavior that proves there is something wrong with him. Another thing that he does is try to isolate himself and hide away from the world. In conclusion I think that he needs to be dealt with. Holden is desperately trying to protect children from evil by trying to erase the bad things they do so they won t get into trouble.
He spends time washing the profanity off the bathroom walls at Phoebes School. I believe this to be a bad idea, because if the children are never caught then they must think it is alright to misbehave. He should back off, let them get caught and face the consequences for their actions. He washed off the profanity that was on the bathroom wall at the museum.
If he doesn t stop playing daddy and let the authorities deal with their problems the whole thing will get out of hand. This shows that Holden has a problem with trying to fix things for others instead of concentrating on himself and his own troubles. In conclusion I think that Holden needs to stop interfering with other people s lives and get some help. The other thing that Holden does that proves he needs to be caught is that he helps out children by holding them back and keeping them from learning their own life s lessons. One example is when there are two children on a teeter-totter, one big, one small. Holden decides to do his duty by pushing down on the small child s side, when the child started crying, it was obvious that he wasn t helping at all.
He has a bad hang-up about trying to fix problems that don t need to be fixed, especially by him. He doesn t realize that he can t shelter all children and keep them from harm. An example is when he tries to help a little child correct his singing, but it backfires when he blunders it. It also proves that he is the Catcher and trying to catch the bad things and make them perfect.
In conclusion I think Holden is once again trying to interfere with other peoples lives and make a mess. In conclusion I think Holden is trying to be the ultimate Catcher. He needs to be seen by all for who he really is and stopped before he causes any more harm to anyone. People need to learn their own lessons so they know right from wrong. Holden is wrong.
