The Meaning of Maturity One of the admirable qualities is maturity. Kids and teenagers often get offended when called immature. One of most common criteria for college admissions is applicants maturity. So what is the definition of maturity?
Being a mature student does not mean being an old-timer. Maturity is not measured by the number of years a person as lived. Instead, the yardstick of maturity is marked by the qualities of self-denial, determination, and dependability. Self-denial is important quality in the mature student. Children think that the whole world evolves around them. They think that their parents and grandparents are there just for them.
Sometimes, children get very angry if they see that parents have their own lives as well. When children get older they see that in order to be successful among people, they need to adapt to living with those people, which means understanding their wants and needs. The next step in the maturity process is becoming able to sacrifice own wants and needs for someone elses good. That is, probably, one of the most difficult things in life.
Determination is another characteristic of a mature student. It is not enough for somebody to want something from life. It is at least as much important to know how to get it, and if that does not work, try more and more options and finally reach the goal. Determined people do not give up because some obstacles appear on their way. Obstacles, on the contrary, make lives of determined people more interesting and bring more excitement to them. Although self denial and determination are both very important, probably the most significant measure of maturity is dependability.
A dependable person is the one who always keeps his promises. People know that such a person is trustworthy and will not set one up in an extreme situation. It is hard to be dependable in all situations, because sometimes people think they want to relax and do not want to be responsible for anything. The definition of maturity can be put in three words: dependability, determination and self-denial.
A truly mature person is certainly able of sacrificing his / her needs for someone or something else. Such a person understands that he / she is not the center of the world and if he / she gives up something the world will not stop spinning because of that. Dependability means that a person has passed the age of empty promises and irresponsibility. A mature person knows that everything she / he does will have a consequence and may effect someone in a negative way. That is why he / she strives to keep the promises and never let anyone down.
Determination is another quality of a mature student. A person sets a goal for him / herself and does everything to achieve this goal. The person is motivated to reach the goal no matter what happens. Maturity is a very important quality for a student because it makes the person responsible, reliable and able to make sacrifices.
