Essay on Animal Farm In George Orwell's Animal Farm pigs managed to set their dictatorship over the other animals on the farm. The growth of pigs power was achieved step by step due to the various verbal and non- verbal forms of argumentation. First the pigs invented the philosophy of Animalism and thus tried to show that they cared about life conditions of the other animals. They used the song The Beats of England and the flag to popularize the ideology and turn the rest of the animals into the community which would be easily subdued. To set the discipline and to make the members of the farm obedient the pigs wrote the Seven Commandments and used a kind of police (dogs). To strengthen the power, the pigs took the responsibility of making decisions, planning and supervising, consequently the life on the farm became fully dependent on the pigs.
And finally, to suppress those who would raise their voices against the ruling of pigs and to prevent any kind of opposition, the pigs spread the myth about the enemies who would seek any opportunity to destroy the farm. It was in the interests of pigs to bring down the idea of their irreplaceability, their important mission, in order to persuade the other animals that only pigs could save them. The means of demonstrating pigs importance were mostly nonverbal: gestures, appearance, etc. As a matter of fact, pigs nonverbal forms of argumentation aimed at subjugating the other animals on a subconscious level. For example, Major was with a wise and benevolent appearance (chapter I, p. 1) and consequently he won the confidence of the rest of the animals. Also, with the help of his gestures Major demonstrated his particular role on the farm and thus made other animals obey and respect it.
When he raised his totter for silence (chapter 1, p. 6), the rest became silent, when he wanted to communicate, the others were ready to loose an hour of sleep to come and listen to him (p. 1). The appearance and behaviour of Napoleon silently persuaded the rest of the animals that he was not like the others, he had his own mission to become the leader of the animals. Pre-eminent among the pigs were two young boars named Snowball and Napoleon, Napoleon was a large, rather fierce-looking Berkshire boar, the only Berkshire on the farm, not much of a talker but with a reputation for getting his own way. (chapter II, p. 9) Thus Napoleon was perceived as a creature of a strong character, who knew what to do, who would find a way out from any problem and so he could be relied on. As it was noted above, the authority of pigs was based on the ideological principles of Animalism (Seven Commandments) and on the police the dogs who were specially trained execute commands of the leader. According to the Seven Commandments, all animals were equal. It was also necessary for the members of the farm to distinguish between enemies and friends not to do some prohibited actions.
The Seven Commandments were the law of the farm and accordingly the police punished every one who disregarded it. In the speeches which preceded setting the ideology the pigs wanted to persuade the rest of the animals that they led miserable life, that they needed to change it and overthrow the authority of humans. Also while speaking about hardships of animals life the pigs showed how they cared about their poor neighbours on the farms. The pigs allegedly wanted to improve life of the animals and they seemed to know how to do it. The life of an animal is misery and slavery: that is the plain truth. What then must we do?
Why, work night and day, body and soul, for the overthrow of the human race! (chapter I, p. 4) However, Animalism was not understood by some part of the animals at once. Evidently, it needed to be popularized on the farm. Such means which guaranteed a quicker acceptation of the ideology was the song The Beasts of England. It described a picture of a happy life without humans, it urged animals to unite for the day when Rings shall vanish from our noses, And the harness from our hack, (chapter 1, p 7) When the animals started to sing Beats of England it produced a magic effect even on those who were not clever enough: Almost before Major had reached the end, they had begun singing it for themselves. Even the stupidest of them had already picked up the tune and a few of the words And then, after a few preliminary tries, the whole farm burst out into 'Beasts of England' in tremendous unison. (chapter I, p. 8) To strengthen their leadership the pigs separated their duties from those of the other animals. The fact is the pigs did not work on the field; they were making plans, giving speeches, giving commands, supervising and directing the rest of the animals.
In this way the pigs stressed their importance on the farm. The whole management and organisation of this farm depend on us. (chapter 3, p. 24) As it was noted previously, the pigs needed to prevent any alternative to their authority. This was achieved by introducing the myth about enemies of the farm. Eventually, the category of enemies comprised anybody otherwise-minded, real and unreal creatures. As a matter of fact, only enemies were guilty for drawbacks or defects in the life of the farm. 'Comrades, ' he said quietly, 'do you know who is responsible for this? ... Snowball has done this thing!
In sheer malignity, thinking to set back our plans and avenge himself for his ignominious expulsion, this traitor (chapter V, p. 47) Summing up all noted above, I come to the conclusion that the pigs thoroughly planned their coming to power on the farm. They used verbal and nonverbal forms of argumentation which were in a logically correct consecution. As it may be seen in the paragraphs above, the pigs started their argumentation against the poor conditions of animals lives and thus in favour of changes, in other words rebellion. Then the pigs popularized the ideology, which became the basis of their dictatorship. Another effective argumentation of the pigs was the punishment for disobedience executed by the police. Also the pigs attempted to prevent any opposition to their governance and finally proved their irreplaceability on the farm.
As a result, the pigs assumed full leadership over the animals.
