Peace and Conflict Resolution (Education) Judson Cox's article Erasing Christianity is about an increasing absurdity of religious policy in American schools. Author gives us an example of officials favoring childrens Muslim indoctrination in many school districts, while even mentioning of Christianity as valid worldview, is altogether banned. U. S. District Judge Phyllis Hamilton has ruled that the Byron Union School District was not indoctrinating students by requiring them to wear Islamic garb, memorize verses from the Koran, pray to Allah and play "jihad games" as part of a simulation approach to Islamic studies (Cox). Many people raise concern whether it is appropriate to promote Islam in America, while this country is facing the threat from Muslim world.
Author rightly asks: Islam may be a "religion of peace", with highly nuanced interpretations of the Koranic commands to kill Jews and Christians, but if Muslim scholars can't teach such nuances, should we rely on public school teachers? (Cox). Yet, Cox indulges in another extreme, she says that American nation can only be Christian, if it wants to maintain its cultural identity. I personally, dont see any difference between Jehovahs encouragements to dash goyim childrens heads against the rock and Allahs idea of getting rid of unbelievers This is exactly the reason why no religious nonsense can be taught in American public schools, regardless of whether it is based on Judeo-Christian or Muslim values. Therefore, its wrong to promote Christianity as something that is meant to counter balance Islam both religions have originated in Middle East, both promote sick morality, both deny life for the sake of illusory kingdom of heaven. The ideas of education and religion are diametrically opposite.
Religious issues can only result in educational conflict, if they were allowed to become part of it, in the first place. Cox appears to be the person, whos mind isnt overly loaded with intellect. She says: Literature, the arts, science, math and technology were preserved and promoted through the Church when the Dark Ages threatened to extinguish the spark of knowledge (Cox). It was always the Church that tried to slow down cultural and scientific progress! Were now in possession of only the fraction of ancient Roman and Greek literature, because Christians used to pile up ancient manuscripts and set them on fire, for alleged heresy.
Author clearly confuses Western culture and Christianity, which are related to each other in the same way that elephants are related to the process of thermonuclear fusion. Still, when we talk about educational conflicts on the ground of religion, it appears that they can be resolved quite easily. The states legislatures should design educational laws that could not be interpreted differently. The best way to assert peoples compliance with the idea of separation between Church and the State, is when their attempts to ignore this principle in the field of public education, will result in severe punishment. At the same time, it is wrong to cancel traditional celebration of Christmas at schools, as it had lost its religious essence long ago.
Also, there are semi-religious celebrations that promote racial secularism, such as Kwanzaa, that deserve banning Schools should simply remain places of learning and nothing else. Many sociologists suggest that it is only about 50 - 100 years before Christianity will extinct, although it might take a bit longer for Islam. Both of these religions are simply too outdated to effectively address peoples spiritual needs in age of computers and genetically modified food. Therefore, it is a crime to be introducing schoolchildren to the ideas of religious intolerance. Itd be beneficial for the society if both, fundamental Christians and Muslims were rounded up and sent to some uninhabited island, where they could crush each others skulls all they want. But under no circumstance, these kinds of people can be allowed near the public schools.
