All choices have consequences which might be either positive or negative. Although able to choose a course of action we cannot choose the consequences as well as we must understand that our choices seldom affect only us but they nearly always affect the lives of others. As we get older, the choices become greater. Greater choices lead to greater consequences. Lester Burnham is suffering a mid-life crisis that affects the life of his family which is made up of his stressed materialistic wife and rebelling dour daughter. He has no passion, no plans, no joy.
Neither his wife or daughter enjoy their way of living. They all are almost like strangers in the airport. Lester's wife takes care only about things and his daughter is obsessed with her body and doesnt want her parents to come closer to her life. The looser looses his family and himself. But Lester is finally tired of everything and he decides to choose another way of living.
This man has made one of the greatest choices in his life. Inspired by the young mans laissez-faire attitude he decides to live a new life, life on his own terms. The changes of his life, for better or worse, include quitting his job, blackmailing his former employers, lusting after his daughters friend, taking a new job at the local fast food joint, buying pot worth of thousands of dollars and laing down the law in his home. This is the greatest choice of Lester Burnham.
He breaks free and this very choice leads to changes in lives of his wife and daughter. They are each experiencing awakenings of their own. Carolyn, his wife, cold and frigid, at long last really frustrated by her relationship with Lester or lack thereof is really shocked by this change in her husband. Not willing to play up to his new way of life and to tolerate her new husband who doesnt keep silence any more but accuses her in everything possible and impossible she begins an affair with a real estate agent who calls himself The King. Thats what she needs now: to be a queen but not to bear with her mad unsuccessful husband who for some reason thinks that his new car, new job and new style of behavior make him the ruler of the world. Suddenly she even feels his victim.
He knows where shes most vulnerable. She is not ready to react correctly, she becomes even worse and anger grows. His daughter is also quite surprised by this new image of her father. The girl is not used to such an activity from her fathers side. When she finds out what exactly pushed her father to choose this new life she chooses herself an unusual relationship with a young drug dealer and leaves her house for good. She chooses her own way and this is her reaction.
This newfound energy of Lester makes his wife and daughter uncomfortable. They both used to situation that they two did whatever they wanted and he just didnt say a word. But they cant handle his new style. Although everything Lester wants is just the same courtesy as he had towards these ladies. But this small claim doesnt do him anything good. His wife as his daughter just do not want him to be alive any more.
Each of them has her own plan: his wife practises shooting while his daughter is ready to give away her money she has been saving for her breast correction in order to hire a killer. Unfortunately, as husband, wife, and daughter each follow the own trajectory and this choice, this new life chosen by Lester Burnham was just like his last song but his wife and daughter did not accompany him. They made their own choices. And these choices of each of them finally have teared their family apart. Lester may have lost everything by the end of the story but hes no longer a looser. Only he has found freedom: his daughter head off with her boyfriend to become professional drug dealers and his wifes transformation left her alone while Laster died with a deep, satisfied smile; satisfied because his choice was right.
At least it was right for him. Unfortunately neither his wife nor his daughter used this choice as a chance to change their lives also for good.
