Current Events (1) We live in time when conceptual validity of sociological theories is being undermined by demographic trends within Western societies. This is because classical sociological concepts explain social dynamics within racially homogeneous societies. These concepts view society as open thermo-dynamical system, which can be characterized by the number of components, within its body, and by the quality of the links between these components, which bind system together. The existence of conflicts between the elements of the system prevents it from descending into the state of energetic entropy. However, the advent of multiculturalism brought about the situation when tension between systems elements causes them to exist in semi-independent mode, which in its turn, results in increasing the rate of social entropy and in creation of societies within society that are not subjected to conventional law, as it does not correspond to the notion of ethnic solidarity.
In this paper, we will analyze articles that view celebration of diversity, as such that undermine the very integrity of societies, affected by this doctrine. In his article The Death of Multiculturalism, David Brooks is making very good point when he suggests that more and more citizens realize the counter-productive essence of multiculturalism, as social concept that strives to adjust the objective reality to its ideological notions. Apparently, even the most notorious hawks of political correctness become concerned over the fact that, it is only the matter of time, before White people will find themselves a minority in their own country, if insanity of multiculturalism is allowed to gain a momentum: Democrats have come to understand that they need to pay less attention to minorities and more to the White working class if they ever want to become the majority party again. Democrats are purging the last vestiges of the New Left and returning to the older civic liberalism of the 1950 s and early 1960 s (Brooks).
Despite the fact, that Brooks article lacks the conceptual basis, as something that would allow author to substantiate his conclusions; the fact that New York Times published his article has value in itself. Karen Arenson and Al Baker, in their article Noose on Door at Columbia Prompts Campus Protest, provide us with insight on what causes the continuous deterioration of American society's integrity. In the article, authors talk about the case of Columbia University's Professor Madonna G. Constantine, who was caught plagiarizing the works of her colleagues. Mrs. Constantine specializes in racial relations, but it is color of her skin that qualified her for the job and not her professional adequateness.
Authors say: Students and professors wondered how this could happen at Teachers College, which cherishes its image as a bastion of liberalism and multiculturalism (Arenson, Baker). The answer is simple - the promotion of multiculturalism endorses racial mixing. In its turn, racial mixing undermines the society's integrity, because people affected by it, are less capable of operating with abstract matters, which corresponds to scientifically proven fact that such people score significantly lower at IQ tests. The only question here is what Mrs. Constantine was teaching students at Columbia University, given the fact that the level of her intelligence would only qualify her to apply for job at meat-processing plant, at best? The article The Trouble with Multiculturalism, by Leon Wieseltier, provides us with even better understanding of metaphysical fallacy of multiculturalism: Multicultural individuals, from the standpoint of the ancestral group and the inherited tradition, are lost individuals, and fallen.
They join, in their persons, influences and instructions that were not supposed to be joined (Wieseltier). As we have mentioned earlier, every society is nothing but an open thermo-dynamical system. If we leave any open system functioning, without being unattended, it will only be the matter of time, before structural links between the elements of a system will weaken, resulting in creation of thermo-dynamic mis balance. The policy of multiculturalism cannot benefit society in principle, because it strives to bring even more mis balance into the system. It is only after the great civilizations of the past had become multicultural that they were being easily sacked by the barbarians, as such that had lost its structural integrity. In his article A Mexican Baby Boom in New York Shows the Strength of a New Immigrant Group, Nina Bernstein suggests that sociological conflict theory fails to address issues that American society faces nowadays.
According to the theory, societies are being characterized by the levels of social inequality among citizens. Author comes to conclusion that it is British national cuisine, which can be used as metaphysical foundation, upon which the notion of national value should be based. There is no doubt that authors idea sound definitely fresh, but only very few people can seriously believe that it might have a practical value, because he strives to transform the concept of national solidarity into something that is only related to the external manifestations of peoples existential mode. We can teach a newly arrived immigrant from Pakistan to eat porridge for breakfast, but it is very doubtful of whether this alone will enable such person to embrace British national spirit as his own.
The article Multicultural Harmony and Reality in Canada, by John Vinocur, explains why multicultural societies are much more prone to the dangers of terrorism than traditional ones. This is because, very often, socially destructive behavior, on the part of representatives of ethnic minorities, actually corresponds to their understanding of what the notion of celebration of diversity stands for. As far as visible minorities go, the idea of complete integration here is absurd. They have separate social circles; they do not believe they are Canadian says author and we can only agree with him. In his article, Vinocur provides us with numerous examples of how contradictory the sociological concepts of multiculturalism are.
