Differences between pre and post millenarianism The term millenarianism refers to the belief of some Christians in a reign of the Christians on earth either before (pre) or after (post) the second coming of Christ. Chapter 20 verses 1 - 7 of the book of Revelation is the text on which these beliefs are usually based. The verses mention Satan being chained for a thousand years and describes the faithful as sitting on thrones and reigning with Christ. It is a belief that has had adherents throughout church history, though they have varied as to whether this reign will take place before or after Christ returns. Seventh Day Adventists believe that the second coming is delayed because people do not keep the Sabbath, Friday evening to Saturday evening, or the dietary laws of the Old Testament.
They are opposed to many aspects of modern life that do not fit with their beliefs. In America, which has no state religion, the various beliefs are tolerated. In England in the period following the civil war there were diverse views on millenarianism and the idea of the second coming. Eventually the population had had enough of the belief that chaos must ensue and restored the monarchy. American puritans were led by a belief that Christ would soon come to reign on earth when they tried to convert the natives.
Some believed that the native Americans were the descendants of the ten lost tribes of Israel and that the Jews must be converted before the coming of Christ. In America there are those who see the chaos in the modern world as signs of the imminence of the coming of Christ. In Mark 13 verses 3 - 8 Jesus warns that before the end of the world there will be wars and rumours of wars. Those who follow such beliefs will be less inclined toward peace moves if they really believe that peace will delay the second coming. For them church life will take precedence over state as when the teaching of evolution was banned by some American states. In the famous 'monkey trial' Darrow defended a teacher's right to teach it and the law took his side and has continued to do so, but there are those Christians who still oppose this view.
