Men in Nursing In the days when more and more women occupy the traditional workplaces of men (large companies executives, policemen, travelers, etc. ) some men tend to devote their living to the, seemingly pure feminine from the first sight occupation, of nurse. Some may argue that it does not even sound decent for a man to be a nurse but I will argue with that. In this paper I will examine what are the benefits for the society of attracting more men to the nursing profession, and at the same time I will show how men can develop their personal traits with the help of such a useful and valuable to our society occupation. First of all I would like to focus on the undeniable fact that for the most of the people the occupation of nursing serves only as a gate to the further career development. Indeed, having worked as a nurse for several years provides a deep insight into the profession of a doctor. Besides, the graduates of medical school are first of all sent to the nursing practice to the community hospitals for the sake of their deeper understanding of what they should be expecting.
In some European countries, like Sweden and Norway, there a good approach to education of future doctors is accepted. The person who wants to try himself or herself out for the position of surgeon or dentist is first of all sent to this department as a nursing trainee. This is done for the purpose of identifying whether the person is psychologically suitable for the position or not. Moreover the person has a chance to try out his or herself determination of willingness to devote six years of life to the study of medical science. One of the aspects of masculine nursing is the fact that men can provide better help to doctors in the extraordinary situations. Sometimes, when natural disasters or other catastrophes happen, many people suffer severe injuries.
Very often in these cases special attitude is requested from nurses. The nurse must show enough courage not only to support the patent but also the doctor. I do not say that women nurses cannot cope with such a task, I rather believe that men are traditionally viewed as more courageous and strong beings. The interesting mental approach of men, which sometimes may even be viewed as ignorant, to the problems of patients inspires them to take own care of their problems. The take-care provided by women oftentimes relaxes the immune powers of patients organism.
While men make the patients mobilize their will and struggle with disease more enthusiastically. There is a set of requirements that the good nurse must meet. Nurses absolutely must have a distinct type of temperament. For instance, a nurse working in a reanimation department has to be able to stand the gruesome reality of this environment. A good nurse must also be enough enduring in order not to lose the grip in the middle of operation whatsoever.
Together with the physical requirements the nurse should possess a stable emotional set of character. The nurse must know how to calmly deal with the death of a patient, and what are the exact words, which he will tell the relatives of the dead (for it is the nurse, who delivers this news to them) (Kurzen 45). As for me, I believe that all of the above traits of the character are innate to the mans mentality, while women must continuously develop these skills during their lives. Another very important issue is the difference of sexes. Of course the profession of doctor implies that this person, in case of medical aid necessity, must have access to even the most intimate parts of the patient bodies. However, there are many people on our planet, which are of different religious beliefs and confession.
In order for the medics not to offend their culture they must be provided medical help on the basis of sexual segregation (meaning men work with men, women work with women). And of course, there are times when some particular person can understand the patient (simply due to the physiological similarities of organisms) better when they are of the same sex. The conclusion of my essay is very simple and should be already obvious. Nursing is not strictly a female profession. Nursing requires a lot of courage and self-dedication, and men should be given equal with women rights to provide medical assistance and aid to the patients.
