Hudson Taylors life reminds one of Jeremiah the prophet: I was separated from my mothers womb. And his conversion was like everything else in his life, a monument to the power of prayer. Before Hudson Taylor was born his parents prayed for him. But as he grew in his life he did not follow the Christian way.

However, at sixteen years old, as his mother lay, pleading with God to save her son, Hudson Taylor was saved by Gods grace. From that time on Hudson Taylor became a man who lived and breathed he must move men through God- by prayer. From what he did at the age of nineteen, to the end of his life, Hudson Taylor lived the promise in John 14: 3 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. There are four primary areas in which Hudson Taylors life is an example to all Christians.

The first has to be Hudson Taylors desire of getting closer to God. As one studies Hudson's life one finds instances like: his deepest desire was to have the unfailing presence of His Lord. At one point Hudson Taylor became very dissatisfied with his spiritual life and viewed himself as a cracked cistern. He was convinced that there was a deeper experience of Divine fullness. He yearned for a life characterized by the filling of the Holy Spirit, unbroken fellowship with his Lord, peace in the storm, joy in adversity, and a holy life. On this point Hudson Taylor concluded that no matter how difficult his service, how sad his bereavement, how helpless he was, Jesus could meet all his needs.

And there Hudson Taylor rested. A second area that was extremely important was that of preparation. When Hudson Taylor knew where God called him, he began to strenuously prepare for that field. He performed more exercise. He exchanged his regular bed for a hard mattress. 2 And he began to study the gospel of Luke in the Mandarin language and study Chinese. Hudson also began to study medicine.

He obtained a job as an assistant for a doctor. He moved to Drainside, a poverty stricken area of England, to accustom himself to something of the loneliness and dangers of living in a strange land where only God would be his companion. An illustration serves to show this: Hudson Taylor had been called out late one night to witness to and pray over a sick woman with starving children. As he tried to pray, his words choked in his mouth because he had a silver coin that would answer his prayer.

He heard his heart condemn him. He gave them his last coin. As Hudson Taylor ate his last meal, he remembered the Scripture: He that giveth to the poor length to the Lord. The next day Hudson Taylor received a package. In it was a gold coin worth ten times the silver coin. Hudson learned one can trust God with his last cent.

The spiritual preparation Hudson Taylor did was needed far more than the physical preparation. Because of growing spiritually the way he did, he had a phenomenal base from which to build his life in China. The third area that stands out in Hudson Taylors life is the faith he learned to have in God. One of the major promises Hudson Taylor clung to was the promise I will never leave thee nor forsake thee. The faith of Hudson Taylor is seen in many situations that happened in his life, i. e.

the death of his wife and when the British began their bombardment of Canton in 1837. However, the British situation stands out more pronounced. It is hear that great faith in God had to be exercised. The Cantonese people rose up, because of the bombardment, to kill all the foreigners in their area. The only thing Hudson Taylor could do was to cry out to God for protection and trust Him for that 3 protection.

The attack was prevented and Hudson Taylor said we were led to prove that Sufficient is His arm alone, and our defense is sure. One final area, and the most critical, is that of prayer. Hudson Taylor was a man who lived and breathed prayer. He truly believed that he must move men through God by prayer.

Everything in his Christian life proved this. Often Hudson Taylor would not make known his needs to men, and only pray unto God, leaving the results with Him. Wonderfully, God never failed him. Many times Hudson devoted much time to wrestling with God in prayer. Two illustrations stand out in Hudson Taylors life that shows the power of prayer. First, whenever there was a need in connection with the Lords work, Hudson believed in asking God according to John 14: 13.

While in England, he counted up the contributions received from the fourth of the month to the twenty-fourth and found that they amounted to sixty-eight pounds. Hudson related to some friends that this amount was 235 pounds less than what was needed. Hudson told the friends that he and them needed to ask the Lord to remind some of His stewards of the needs of the work in China. That evening a letter arrived, with a check for 235 pounds, 7 shillings, 9 pence. Second, Hudson believed that the work of God would never lack Gods supplies.

He pleaded with God for new workers. Before the year ended 102 new missionaries had set sail for China. When one looks at Hudson Taylors life one can only be impressed with his walk with God. His prayer life, his devotion to God, his faith among adverse circumstances and his diligence to get the work, God called him to, accomplished should stir us all to examine our own spiritual lives and to strive much more than we do. It would be 4 wonderful, if what was said of Hudson Taylor at his death, could be said of us at our death: Dear and venerable Pastor, we love you. We are your children.

You opened for us the road, the road to heaven. You loved us and prayed for us long year
