It was a small, circular, mysterious mirror. When Eric picked it up, he saw his crystal clear reflection, enhanced by the smooth, silver glass. He looked up out of the old boxes he was rummaging through to find the rest of his dimly lit garage. He could hear kids playing outside and he rubbed his hands together, trying to remove the sting of the bitter cold.

He picked up the mirror, and took it into his mansion of a house in a quiet, peaceful suburb. It was a Midwestern winter, and the days were short, bringing cold nights whistled with the sounds of speeding cars flying down the highway. Eric heard the piercing call from his mother. "Eric, we " re going to McDonald's. What do you want us to bring you back?" Eric thought about it a moment, and responded in his low, heavy voice. "Im not hungry right now. Go ahead. "You really should eat!" she yelled back. He didn't respond.

Instead, he went into his room, mirror in hand. Eric had long been obsessed with the paranormal, reading books of ghosts, demons, and angels. It was in these books that he learned of foretelling the future through the use of mirror glass. He remembered about the cool antique mirror and figured he would give the ancient art a shot.

He opened up the book, looked at some procedures, and followed the instructions. He set out the fancy purple cloth on his desk and placed the circular mirror down upon it. He then eagerly looked into the book and slowly chanted the specified gibberish in slow, broken Latin. With that, he blew out his candles, waiting as the book said, for the mirror's powers to unlock. Nothing happened. He got up from the chair in expectation that it wouldn't work, and proceeded to turn the lights on, when he was shocked by what he heard.

It started off as a quiet whisper, and as he listened in absolute fear it became louder and louder, until he could hear nothing else but the same repetitive sound in his ears. It reminded him of a dog growling in anger, but this was much more low and contained what could only be described as pure, clean, untouched evil. This was enough to scare the pants off him. However, he was drawn over to the mirror, which was now glowing and illuminating his room with bright lights. The silver surface of the mirror was rippling, and had an almost had a water look to it. He gazed at the glass in wonder; the evil grumble now muffled by some unknown outside force.

He then remembered what he had done, and then began to focus on things he had wondered about. Such as his future, the girls at school that he liked, and his friends. At first the images were translucent and indefinable. With more concentration, and what seemed to drain him of his energy, they became more visible. He thought of his friends and cars. In the wavy, slightly distorted images of the mirror, he saw cars.

Many of them driving down the street. He saw the normal scenes of rush hour traffic as the view shifted from scene to scene. Then he saw something that horrified him. A blue Mustang, crushed like a pop can, by some unrecognizable object obviously many times the weight of the car. It was his friend Bobby's car. Eric saw a couple of paramedics rolling a gurney away from the wreckage.

And what he saw next struck terror into his heart. It was long, black, and shiny, just like in all of the movies. He could see it was occupied, and that scared Eric the most. With no further thoughts, he blew out the candles, and flipped the mirror over. Was what he saw real? Surely not, he thought, no one can tell the future.

He called Bobby who was lying in a deep sleep when the phone rang. "BOBBY!"Huh? What? Eric? Is that you?

What are you doing?"Um... " Eric realizes his friend was ok. "Uh nothing, just calling to see what's up. "At two in the morning?" Bobby yelled into the phone. Eric looked at the clock in his room. He stared in amazement at the time. He must have been looking at the mirror for hours!

He hung up the phone, and dropped to his bed. He woke up the next morning. And flipped on the television. Gazing in a daydream like haze, he saw his friends twisted, wrecked car, just as it was in the mirror! He ran up to his room, and threw the mirror out his window. But as soon as the mirror left his hands, he felt as if someone had taken his soul from him.

He ran outside, and got the mirror bringing it back to his room. Unbelievably the mirror remained unharmed. As if it were beyond his control he flipped of the lights, and chanted the words, making images appear before him. He dropped through a hole, casting himself into an indescribable trance.

He lost himself in the vivid, watery images. He made a habit of this, forgetting his friends and family using the mirror whenever he wasn't eating or sleeping. It quickly became an addiction. One day he gazed into the mirror. He expected the normal images.

Things that would happen, victories in the night's baseball games, etc. Instead, something else happened. A huge hand shot out from the mirror, grabbing Eric by the neck, pulling him through the mirror's watery glass. He got up from where he landed, and was horrified at what he saw. He was underground or so it seemed. He looked at the huge red dirt walls, the spiral down, almost as if he was on a singular step of a huge funnel like stairway.

All around him people stood and walked. Eric realizes to his terror, that their heads were twisted so that they faced backwards! All around him, they walked backwards, none of them noticing Eric. WHAT IS THIS PLACE?" A person gazed at him, and said no words, but Eric could hear it perfectly. "This, my friend, is hell. You were brought here to be shown what will happen if you don't change your ways. "Is this about my mirror?"Ah, yes, this is about the mirror. Look around you.

All of these souls practiced such as you do, and now they must pay for seeing forwards all their lives by seeing backwards for eternity! You must stop before it is too late. " Too late. The words rang in Eric's head as he flew up from his bed. Quickly, he took the mirror and all of his books.

He took them all out to his backyard. He lit a fire, and shattered the mirror and threw all his books into the fire. Eric, what do you think your doing out here? his mother asked. Are you listening to me As the fire continues to burn, Eric remains in an unconscious state.

He almost seemed to be possessed. His mother approaches him as if he were an untamed animal. She quickly moved him away from the fire and said, Eric. Eric. What are you doing out here in the middle of the night burning books? As Eric awakened from his indescribable deep sleep, he had no idea what was going on.

A dream he thought to himself quietly. No way was it possible to have a dream so real. Wheres Bobby he asked. Why, whats going on Eric?

Is there something you arent telling me? Nothing, nevermind, he replied. Eric and his mother proceeded to go ahead and put out the fire. Eric found himself still trying to put everything together as if it were the hardest puzzle imaginable. His mother stood beside him shaking her head in disbelief.

Just go back to bed, ok. Well take about this in the morning. Eric continued on about his curious thoughts as he returned to his bedroom. He found himself tossing and turning in bed. He was unable to sleep, wondering about his thoughts and his visions, curious as to what happened to his friend Bobby. He found himself glaring across the room.

What he had seen frightened him more than the actual dream itself. Sitting on his desk, sure enough, it was that mysterious mirror along with his books. He then went completely blank. Suddenly he felt an unbearable thrust of adrenaline that knocked him right out.

The following morning he went down stairs after hearing the doorbell ringing over and over. He went to answer the door and there stood his friend Bobby. Whats up man? Wow you really look worn down. Are you feeling alright? Eric shut the door in pure disbelief.

He then walked to the living room and there sat his mother on the couch, reading a magazine. You wanted to talk to me? Yes, you know what you did last night? she asked.

Um I Uh You forgot to take out the garbage. Deep breaths showed immediate relief for Eric. It was all just a dream, right? Everything was back to normal. To prove that it was all over, he went into the garage to look for this mirror that was in his dream. Up against the wall sat a few unpacked boxes, almost identical to the ones in his dream.

As he began digging, he saw a circular mirror similar as he remembers. As he reaches for the mirror he hears his mother calling him. What mom? What do you want? Do you want anything from McDonalds? Im not hungry right now!

In those few seconds the mirror had disappeared without a trace. Was it all in the mirror or in the mind? Could it have been some sort of spiritual sign of some sort? Or did this kid Eric have a really creative imagination.

Nobody will ever know.
