Francis Macomber was a very handsome thirty-five year old man. He was well built and very good at court games. In addition Francis held many big game fishing records. Throughout the story Francis goes through many stages and changes very much from the beginning to the end.

However, throughout the entire story Francis shows that he has three very important traits, he is adaptable, bold, and is also very direct. First, Francis Macomber was very adaptable throughout the story. As Francis spent more and more time with Wilson he changed from having contempt for Wilson, to enjoying being with him. In the beginning, Wilson attempts to make a joke about Francis face being red.

At that point, since Francis was not getting along with Wilson, he did not laugh at the joke. Later on however Wilson was talking about how he whipped his workers when they didnt do what he asked rather than fine them. After this statement by Wilson Francis offered his support by saying, Yes, we take a beating everyday. This was just one of the signs that Wilson was coming to enjoy being with Wilson. Francis also adapts to his wife being with Wilson.

One night Francis was awake for over two hours while his wife was out of the tent. After she returned Francis found that she had been with Wilson and was immediately angry with both Wilson and his wife. Later in the story Wilson has adapted to the fact that Wilson and his wife will be together and accepts it. At one point Wilson is trying to get Margot to stay in camp and Francis asks, Youre sure you wouldnt like to stay in camp with her yourself and let me go hunt the buffalo? Francis is in this question allowing his wife and Wilson to be together.

The greatest adaptation Francis makes through out the story is in his ability to become a successful hunter. In the beginning of the story Francis is afraid of going into the woods after the injured lion. I dont want to go in there. After expressing his fear, Francis continued to take a couple of steps into the woods until he saw the lion and bolted out of the woods scared. The final hunt Francis makes is hunting buffalo.

Again a buffalo is injured and goes into the woods. However, learning from his past, and making adjustments, Francis has adapted to this new hunting sport and decides to go into the grass after the injured buffalo. Second, in all of the actions Francis makes, he is very bold. Macomber boldly asks if Wilson will tell about Francis running away from the lion to his friends back at the club. Im awfully sorry about that lion business.

It doesnt have to go any further, does it? In the hunting business to ask a question like that is considered to be rude. However, Wilson boldly asked it anyways. Francis is again bold in threatening his wife after she has been with Wilson. After Margot had been out of the tent for a couple of hours upon her return Francis asks persistently, Where have you been? Francis then tells Margot that she wont leave him, and she calls him a red-faced swine.

Francis, near the end of the story makes his boldest move of the story in going into the grass after the buffalo. Francis asks Wilson if he has that feeling of happiness about whats going to happen? Francis begins to get very excited and Wilson tells him not to get too excited because it draws away from the excitement of the kill. Unfortunately, this bold move of going after the buffalo for Francis turned out to be what killed him as his wife shot him in the back of the head. Finally, Francis is very direct in his actions, thoughts, and statements.

Francis first shows he will be direct when he tells Wilson that he doesnt want to go into the woods after the injured lion. Francis made many suggestions, or gave reasons as to why they should not go into the woods after the lion. Francis asked if they could just set the grass on fire? Or if they could send beaters in after the lion. Later in the story, Francis is very direct in telling Wilson that he is going to go into the grass after the buffalo.

Macomber wants to make up for the mistake he made when he ran away from going after the lion. Francis tells Wilson to stay back in camp with Margot because they are arguing over whether or not Margot should go. Francis directly tells Wilson that he is going to go hunt the buffalo and he is going to do it whether or not Margot and Wilson come. Francis got so into shooting the buffalo even Wilson said, Now youre shooting! After spending the day shooting buffalo Wilson decides he is tired. He is very direct in telling Wilson that he would like to go sit down and have a drink.

After a tuff day on the field Francis said to Wilson, Lets get the drink. The buffalo shoot tired him out. In this story Hemming way wrote of hunting, a hobby he enjoyed. He also wrote of a cold-hearted woman, Margot Macomber, and how she murdered her husband trying to make it look like an accident so she would get his money, and could be with another man. Margot no longer loved Francis, and she was staying with him only for the money. While on the safari she also began to fall in love with Wilson, and she no longer had feelings for Francis.

When she saw an opportunity to disguise the murder of her husband she was quick to pull the trigger. In killing Francis, Margot could have his money, and love somebody else. Francis, however had been a very wonderful man. He was very direct anytime he wanted something had a request he was quick to voice his opinion.

Francis was also bold. By the end of the story Francis would have been willing to go up against anything or anybody, he felt very little fear. Also, Francis had been very adaptable. He adapted to his wifes change of heart, his inability to hunt, and also he changed to make his relationship with Wilson work better.
