I read the book Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. I personally didnt find this book interesting or appealing in any way. If I read for pleasure, which I dont, this would not be the type of book that I would choose to read. I prefer murder mysteries and books that I can relate to more. I found this book very depressing, not that murders are happy, and I also thought that this book brought out a lot of bad things that happen to people in this world and the struggles they have to overcome. Another reason I didnt find this book appealing was the fact that the middle of the book was very slow and it was hard for me to continue.
When I do read, I want to be able to look forward to reading more, not having to make myself. The beginning and end were more interesting and suspenseful but the middle was quite boring. Although I didnt enjoy this book to the fullest, there were some things that I could pick out that the book covered and explained well. For example, the issues that Jane went through in the book were trials and tribulations that do happen in everyday life. They dont happen to me but Im sure they relate to other people in some ways. A good example of from the book that some people could relate to is the relationship between Jane and Mr.
Rochester. Jane takes up a post governess at Thornfield Hall, which is were she meets Mr. Rochester. Mr. Rochester had a wife that no one really knew about because she had some mental problems. She was kept in very close confinement, maam; people even for some years was not absolutely certain of her existence.
No one saw her: they only knew by rumor that such a person was at the Hall; and who or what she was it was difficult to conjecture, said Mr. Edward (page 474, paragraph 3). During the time of Janes stay at the Thornfield Hall, the two end up falling in love with each other. Their love is secret throughout the book until the very end. When Jane and Mr. Rochester are around other people, they act no differently than as if they were just friends.
Secret love happens like that with many people in our society, so I think that is one example of how this book relates to the world today. The overall message of the book was hard to find for me. With some books it is very clear. Others, you may have to search the book to find its hidden message. I personally thought that like many books, this one had more than one message to its readers.
One would be that since Jane was living in a time when women werent thought of as equal to men, she had to overcome that and prove to people around her that she had a lot of potential. She had to deal with many with drawls in her life such as being an orphan for a period of time. I could not hope to get a lodging under a roof, and sought it in the wood I have before alluded to. But my night was wretched, my rest broken: the ground was damp, the air cold, said Jane (page 313, paragraph 4). This quote shows the pain and suffering Jane went through when she was without a home.
At one point in the book she felt like giving up. My strength is quite failing me, I said to my soliloquy. I feel I cannot go much farther. Shall I be an outcast again this night? While the rain descends so, must I lay my head on the cold, drenched ground? I fear I cannot do otherwise: who will receive me?
This quote shows that not only is Jane dealing with the fact that she has no where to live, but also that she feels as if no one cares for her. She is wondering, in this passage, who will rescue her from the misery she feels at this point in her life. This is when Mr. Rochester comes into the picture and, in his own way, takes her into his arms. Through all of Janes struggles, she learned many things that will help her in the future. To me this book is saying life does not go your way, and when it does, that will be the day youve earned it.
That will be the day when youve made so many mistakes that finally you know what to do with your potential as a person and as a human being that is blessed to be alive. The writing in this book was well done. I liked the way the author used detail when describing a room or scenery. It made me feel as if I was walking through the doors into the mysterious rooms with Jane. Also the way she describes Janes movements and her positions.
A small breakfast-room adjoined the drawing-room: I slipped in there. It contained a book-case: I soon possessed myself of a volume, taking care that it should be one stored with pictures. I mounted into the window-seat: gathering up my feet, I sat cross-legged, like a Turk; and having drawn the red moreen curtain nearly close, I was shrine in double retirement, said Jane (page 14, paragraph 1). This book also shows the pain people go through in their lives.
Mr. Rochester had a lot to deal with his wife who had a serious illness. It shows that bad things really do happen to good people. There was a fire in the Thornfield Hall and during that fire Mr.
Rochester's insane wife ended up tossing herself off of a high balcony. Mr. Rochester was injured in the fire but made it out alive. His left eye was severely damaged in the book and couldnt see out of it.
In the end of the book, Jane finds Mr. Rochester and comes back to him. My living darling! These are certainly her limbs, and these her features: but I cannot be so blest after all my misery. It is a dream: such a dream as I have had at night when I have clasped her once more to my heart, as I do now; and kiss her, as thus and felt that she loved me, and trusted that she would not leave me, said Mr. Rochester (page 482, paragraph 6).
Overall I think this book had some good messages and did well on portraying many emotions that come along with struggles throughout lives. Again, I wouldnt read it again but for people who like depressing, emotional, and depressing (meant to say it twice) this would be a great book to cuddle next to the fire with.
