Dave Pelzer, the author of A Child Called It is a surviving victim of child abuse. Written from his viewpoint, this inspirational story takes readers into the horrifying reality of his childhood. The rage, loneliness, and pain felt by child abuse victims becomes obvious. The authors goal in writing this book is to educate and inform readers about child abuse and the possible extent of it. From the ages of five to twelve, Dave Pelzer was brutally beaten and starved by his mentally disturbed alcoholic mother. At first, he lived a healthy and normal life with his parents and brothers.
However, his mother unexpectedly transformed into a monster, venting her anger and rage on her helpless child. To satisfy her sick needs, she devised cruel punishments and tortures to make David suffer. He was fed mouthfuls of ammonia, submerged in freezing cold water for hours, forced to eat his own vomit, stabbed in the stomach, and burnt by fire. These are just a few games his mother used to play.
However, all this was not enough to break the young childs spirit. He never gave his mother the satisfaction of defeating him mentally. With the help of his caring teachers, David was able to conquer and escape from the mothers control. His willpower, courage, and determination allowed him to survive and triumph. His mental strength helped him turn shame into pride and rejection into acceptance. It is wonderful that he has found peace and forgiveness.
This is the ultimate motivational story with many themes involved. Even at rock bottom, David never let his faith and hope die. He found the courage and willpower to survive through the most agonizing moments knowing that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. He never let his mother break his spirit and in the end, he became a triumphant survivor.
This story also lets readers reflect on their own life and discover a new appreciation for their own family and childhood. It is said that if you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead, and a place to sleep, you are better off than 75 % of this world. After hearing some recommendations for this book, I decided to give it a shot (although Im not a big reader). Although I am still upset after reading about the tortures and violent games, I am inspired by the fact that the author survived the whole thing and is out to educate and inform people of the dangers of child abuse. I really enjoyed reading the story of this mans life.
the author used very descriptive language and imagery, David Pelzer creatively illustrated his childhood experiences for the readers... There were many times in this book, I stopped and felt very grateful for what the good Lord has given me. I feel truly blessed to have a wonderful childhood and loving family. I think this book should be read in every classroom so students will learn not to pick on someone because of their clothing, or the way they look. No one knows what happens to that person at home. Its bad enough when someone is being abused at home but classmates make life ten times more miserable by pointing and laughing.
This book is great for people who tear down others so they can feel important. These people need to look beyond the surface and be more sensitive and caring. I highly recommend this book to everyone because it lets readers examine their own life and have a better appreciation for those simple little things people take for granted. The young boys bravery and will to survive motivates people in a way that nothing else can.
