... fiasco occurred. We all got up on the third day at about 7: 30 in the morning. Denny and the girls that were with us left to go get breakfast in town. The rest of us stayed and threw the football.

About half an hour went by and we saw a beach patrolman heading towards us. It looked suspicious so we got in the truck and started to drive away, but he pulled us over. We all got out and he said that he was going to write us each a five-hundred dollar ticket because camping on the beach is illegal. He told us that the police had been taking pictures of us from a plane for the past two days.

At this point we were all really scared because no of us had 500 dollars to pay the ticket. He asked us all for our licenses, addresses and phone numbers. While he was lecturing to Joey about how camping is illegal, we heard, respond to an incident two miles down the beach. As he turned his radio up and listened for more details he said, yall are lucky, I just got called to another incident. I will let you go for now. You can hang out on the beach today but when it gets dark you have to leave or else we will find you and write you each a ticket.

We assured him that we were leaving as soon as the rest of our friends got back from breakfast. The cop got in his suburban and proceeded to drive down the beach and out of site. About twenty minutes later, Denny and the girls came back and we told them what had happened, they just laughed at us and started to pack up the trucks. We drove down the beach and back onto the road.

I had to back all the way down the beach because that was the only way my truck would go on the sand. After about ten minutes of backing and a stiff neck, we were out on the road. Joey wanted to go back into Nags Head because he knew people that lived there and he said that they would let us stay. Our stay there turned out to be the craziest night I have ever experienced. When we got to their house, Joey went up and talked to them and asked if we could stay the night. They said it was no problem and that there was a bed downstairs that we could use and since we had tents we also could set them up in their back yard.

Me and my friend Brent somehow got to sleep inside on the bed. The screaming started at about two in the morning. The people that lived in the house were in there early thirties and they had relatives staying with them also. Brent and I heard screams from outside that sounded like a couple fighting. All of the people that were staying there had been drinking since early in the afternoon and at this time they were extremely inebriated. The screams got closer and closer to the room that I was in.

A few minutes later, the door flew open and a screaming drunk woman that we had not seen came in and slammed it behind her. She got in to the bed with Brent and I and she proceeded to tell us what the fight was about and how it started. However, the scary part of this situation was that she though we were other people and she began to touch us. By this time Brent and I were getting pretty nervous. All of the sudden the woman got up and started screaming again and ran out of the room and shut the door. Brent and I looked at each other and at the exact same time, got up and ran out of the room and into my truck which was parked on the side of the road.

We jumped in and locked all of the doors because we didnt know what was going to happen. We looked on as the verbal confrontation continued until the people went back inside and closed the door. I waited a few minutes and got out of the truck and ran to the backyard where all of the rest of my friends were awake in the tent. I asked them if they had heard the yelling and they said yes. I talked to them for awhile about what had happened and we decided it was best if we got up early in the morning and left. By the time we packed everything and loaded it into the trucks, everyone in the house was up and out on the balcony.

We quickly ran up to where they were all sitting and said thank you. They told us to stay for breakfast but we said that we had to head home. We jogged down the stairs and to our trucks. We all waved goodbye as we pulled away vowing to not go stay at that house again. Our last adventure of the weekend was a trip to Mama Quans, a popular restaurant in Nags Head. We walked into the restaurant dirty, sandy and sunburned and sat down.

Lunch was served to us about 20 minutes after ordering and we sat around the table and reflected on all of the crazy events of our weekend. We finished our food, paid the bill, and began our three and a half hour drive home. During that weekend I learned a lot of things. I learned to make sure your four-wheel drive works before you decide to go drive on the beach, I learned if you hear drunk screaming people, leave as fast as you can. However, the thing that stood out most to me is the value of friends. Some people believe that one should have a lot of friends, not necessarily good ones, but just a lot.

I learned, through my senior skip weekend, that you can have all the friends in the world, but you can only have a few great friends. I think that you are better off with five great friends then having five-hundred regular friends. If you have just a few great friends, you will keep in touch with them over the years. They are the ones that are there for you when you need them the most. Regular friends are not like that. Your normal friends are the dozens and dozens that you had in high school or college that you dont see or talk to after a couple of years.

There is nothing better than great friends.
