Essay There are many differences and similarities between Luhrmanns (1996) version of Romeo and Juliet, and Zeferellis (1968) version. DISCUSS My only love sprung from my only Hate. This famous line has come from a play, which has been made into a movie many times. This Essay is about two of those such movies.

Romeo and Juliet is one of William Shakespeare's greatest love stories and also unfortunately tragedy. In Baz Luhrmanns (1996) film Shakespeare's famous play is updated to the hip modern suburb of Verona still retaining its original dialogue. While Franco Zeferellis (1968) film was the original from the clothes to the language. Both films are the same and yet so different. For example the setting and the clothes are very different. But on the other hand the two films have the language and the plot in common.

Differences To begin with one obvious difference between the two films is the use of the clothing. The costumes in Zeferellis film are true to the original Shakespearean play with the 1300 s style medieval clothes. The women in the film wore beautiful long dresses with lace not buttons with elaborate head ware. The men wore traditional puffy caps, vests and leggings. Alternatively in the modern day film the costumes are colorful and more appealing to the younger audiences.

For example the women wore dresses, makeup and fancy dress at the party. The men wore Hawaiian shirts, bare chests and sunglasses. Both of the families in the two films have family crests of some sort to show other people what family they belong to. The clothes in each film are different to go with the setting. This brings me to my next point. The setting.

Another great difference between the two films is that the films were set in different time periods. In Zeferellis film it is set in medieval Verona in Italy. But in Luhrmanns film (Romeo + Juliet) is set in modern day Verona. Significant setting differences: Luhrmanns (1996) Zeferellis (1968) Big buildings Dirty narrow street Roads Houses made of stone Signs Church beautiful colorful glass windows Cars Horses and cart Middle of city Small town Similarities One thing that both of the films didnt change was the plot. Plot overview: Two respected families of Verona, the Montague's and the Capulets, have been fighting with each other for years over something no one can remember. Romeo Montague goes out with his friends to make trouble at a party the Capulets are hosting (Fancy dress ball), but while there he sees Juliet Capulet, and falls in love with her.

She returns his love, but they both know that their families will never allow them to be together. The story was too much of a famous story to change. If they did no one would understand. In Romeo and Juliet everyone knows what is coming up next. The second similarity I have noticed would be the Shakespearean language spoken in the two films.

We use the Bard's words all of the time in everyday speech however we are often totally unaware that we are using sayings from his work. We frequently quote Shakespeare! William Shakespeare is attributed with writing 38 plays, 154 sonnets and 5 other poems and used about 21, 000 different words. The Oxford English Dictionary with the introduction of nearly 3, 000 words into the language credits Shakespeare.

Here are some of the examples of the things they said in the play: Give me my Romeo; and, when he shall die, Take him and cut him out in little stars, and he will make the face of heaven so fine That all the world will be in love with night, And pay no worship to the garish sun. Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun Good Night, Good night! Parting is such sweet sorrow, that I shall say good night till it be morrow. " What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet Wisely and slow; they stumble that run fast Tempt not a desperate man For you and I are past our dancing days See, how she leans her cheek upon her hand!

O that I were a glove upon that hand, that I might touch that cheek! Shakespeare had a beautiful way of speaking. Its a shame teenagers wouldnt have a clue what he is talking about. These are just some differences and similarities between the two films.

Zeferellis film stayed true to Shakespeare's original play and some people like it that way and think its an outrage to even consider changing the original play. But in Luhrmanns film it is different but in a good way. Some people like the story but can really relate to medieval Verona. I personally think the new film of Romeo and Juliet is much easier for me to follow.

The old one is good but it is out of date and technology wasnt as good as it is now 50 years ago. But overall it is a classic.
