Academic Profile: What do you consider your areas of greatest academic talent and why? My greatest academic strengths can be represented in three archetypes: the worker, the researcher, and the philosopher. I exemplify the worker for I have tremendous focus, and, consequently, a commitment to process. I not only go through each necessary action to achieve a desired ends, but I also use efficient means; this often involves the skill of organization. I exemplify the researcher for I strive for excellence. I make sure that results are precise and accurate in that they are based on sound facts, formulas, etc.
While I have the characteristics of the worker and the researcher, the philosopher is at the core of my being. Indeed, it is the philosopher, which gives the actions of the worker and the researcher meaning. The true archetype of the philosopher contrasts with common perspective; while it may seem that philosophers live their lives aloof from reality or aimlessly wandering, it is the lack of philosophy which will doom people to such lives. I always ask Why? before I determine the course of action. If one asks the question How? , however, he is most likely trying to justify his desire to action by proving the process to be simple or his aversion to action by proving the process to be difficult.
How, which is solved by the worker and researcher, should only be answered after the question of Why? . What major or academic subjects do you look forward to investigating in college and why? I will major in pharmacy . I look forward to pursuing pharmacy for it is in general chemistry, from which pharmacy branches, that I have been able to apply and improve my greatest academic strengths. Possibly the most significant achievement I made through Honors Chemistry and AP Chemistry was reaching a higher level of logical thought.
It is this accomplishment, which was reached only through confronting what was immediately foreign and challenging, that is fundamental in solving every type of problem. Since I have had a difficult time settling on a major, I may use a pharmacy major as merely a starting point, and later pursue a different area within the sciences. In addition, for several prestigious schools, I intend to apply not so much with the intention of pursuing the pharmacy program within these schools but rather to see what other opportunities within the sciences these colleges can offer. If an opportunity of great interest presents itself, even if it is not in line with my former expectations, I will consider it for I do not and cannot know what path I should take in life.
What possible college major (s) or career (s) are you considering? What attracts you to these choices? As previously stated, I will major in pharmacy. The area of neurology is attractive for it is through the study of the human mind that one can reach a greater understanding of human nature, and discover cures for psychological disorders to be solved through psychiatric assistance or surgery. In addition, the area of pediatrics is attractive for it involves directly assisting society. As a boy of suburban America starting his first year of high school, I did not concern myself with the most basic needs. So with what was I to concern myself? There was the simple idea that getting by involves shelter, food, and water, that one who wants something more would buy himself something better, a mansion or an expensive meal. Did I want more money, more power, more respect? I thought that I would surely not mind having all of these, but they cannot be the purpose of my life. People are constantly looking for an escape, and even the spiritual kinds are false. The common form of meditation, which involves a certain breathing exercise or mantra, does not free one from misery but rather distracts him from it. These methods only ignore that feeling of anxiety, which in turn creates conflict. People cannot live with conflict for it wears them down. What a person must do is ask why he is feeling what he is feeling; his form of meditation must be to be tremendously aware of what literally surrounds him. The question of how is nearly irrelevant for it is the question of Why?
that will guide one to finding purpose in his life. Krishnamurtis book, has inspired me not to seek one experience for the rest of my life, but rather to center my life around what matters to me. I will move with tremendous purpose, each step on each stair having the support of my logic and reason. Being absolutely certain of the validity of my actions, distraction will be impossible. A summer job at a local Hannaford supermarket has caused me to consider the differences between service and self-interest. It has been said, and reasonably so, that man is controlled by self-interest. In this view of society, it seems that service does not fit in. Yet, I have found that service does fit within this view, and indeed the concept that man is controlled by self-interest is not a pessimistic one. Service fits in for service is within every persons best interest.
Collective growth and cooperation, which service elicits, will return to the individual. All of mans wars are caused by the sum of conflicts between individuals, which are broken further down into the conflicts within individuals. If man does the opposite, minimizing conflict within himself and with other individuals, the sum of these efforts will be peaceful coexistence. At Hannaford, one can sees the interplay of service and self-interest at its basic level. As an employee, I am required abide by rules of service or otherwise, lose my job. Minor deviations from these rules will result in minor consequences, such as warnings or reprimands.
Beyond these rules of service, there are recommendations on how to serve the public yet these recommendations need not be followed in order to keep ones job. So I asked myself why go beyond the minimum service required? And, when my performance was being monitored, why even adhere to the basic rules of service? I found that it was in my best self-interest that I do go beyond the minimum for it is such service that fosters the growth of a community that is involved in the growth of all of its individuals and not just the privileged few.
