... ). After death, the victim might be repeatedly rape, or mutilated. The crime scene is usually left organized, and the victims possessions are often taken by the killer for future masturbation's. The age of this type of killers are varied. However, usually, those who were arrested are around their mid thirties, attractive, and have good social relationships.

Essentially, the anger-excitation killer lives a double life, carefully separating his conventional life from his fantasy-driven one (Vronsky 208). The anger-excitation killers are normal-looking, just like Ted Bundy. Regardless of their type, serial killers are, nevertheless, commit generally the same crime: murder. Homicide is a growing problem in the United States much like any other violence problems.

Experts believe that serial killings are addiction much like drugs, alcohol, or cigarettes, only that killings are much more deathly and terrifying. Once you started, its extremely hard to stop. There are many factors leading up to the killer first kill such as his / her childhood, stress level, and facilitators. Facilitators are things such as alcohol, drugs, pornography, and others. Literature such as detective magazines, dark philosophy books, and even the Bible also contribute to the killers aspiration to kill.

Once a killer stop holding up to his / her righteous and lose control for their desire, he / she will start the serial murders and will not be able to stop himself / herself . The killing cycle has begun, and the killing patterns emerged. There are generally seven steps in this deadly cycle, beginning with phase one: the aura phase. During this phase, the killer begins to distance himself / herself from social interactions. He / she starts to create his / her fantasies and began to live out of those fantasies, living in two different worlds.

These fantasies often included sadistic sexual acts, as well as other violence acts possibly derive from early childhood experiences. Eventually, the fantasies took over the mind of the killer and at this stage, and the killers will seek ways to fulfill their fantasies. The second phase of the patterns is the trolling phase. In this phase, the killer searches for possible victim, usually around the killers neighborhood or close by. Most serial killers will choose to commit their crimes nearby because they are familiar with the area, knowing where a discreet location to perform their murder is, and where is a perfect place to dump the bodies. There are certain types of victims the killer is searching for, depending on the type of each serial killer.

The victim might get pick because they are simply attractive, look like someone the killer hates, or is unfortunately being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Mission-oriented killers might also targets prostitutes, hitchhikers, or children. The victims types is entirely different from killer to killer, but generally, for the disorganized killers, they simply attack the most vulnerable victims. Also, serial killing is no interracial. A white serial killer will almost always killed whites, and a black serial killer will killed blacks. Once the victim is selected, the disorganized killer will continue to the fifth phase, the murder phase.

However, an organized killer will not be rush and will not approach the selected victim hastily. He / she will intensively follow or stalk the victim, memorizing the victims schedule, and determined the best time to approach the victim. Phase three is the seduction phase, also known as the wooing phase. This phase is only done by the organized killers, those who are much more confident, more daring, and has much better social skills than disorganized killers.

In this phase, the killer tries to socialize with the victim, trying to gain the victims trust. This is an important phase because the killers seem to only proceed to kill those who allow the killers to gain their trust. When homicide detectives finally begin to uncover a pattern of serial murder, one of the first things they notice is that the victims rarely seem to have struggle against their killers (Norris 29). Once the trust is received, the killer will then lure the victim into quiet and secluded area where the killer uncover his / her mask and moved on to the next phase. The fourth phase is the capture phase. The capture of the victim can be as swiftly as snapping a handcuff on the victims wrists, hitting the victim in the head, punching in the stomach, or it can be very labyrinth and take more time.

Richard Cottingham wooed prostitutes with drinks, dinner and sympathy before arranging an exchange of sex for cash (Vronsky 312). The victim may be taken to a new location, far out from people and help. Once the killer is sure that theres no way for the victim to escape, he move to the climax phase of the cycle, the murder. Phase five is the murder phase. As mentioned, a disorganized serial killer will not waste his / her time in phase three or four, he / she will moved from phase two to this phase.

Once a disorganized killer selected his / her victim, he / she will be suddenly attack. Frequently, the victim is killed instantaneously by a powerful attack or a quick strangulation. The corpse is heavily depersonalized by mutilations of face (Vronsky 312). Any violence acts such as rape are often taken place after the victim is dead since disorganized killers are often afraid of social interactions, and prefer to have sex with a silence partner. The organized killers commit much more slow and painful murder act. Once the victim is in the hand of an organized killer, he / she will be tortured and raped before death.

The act of killing is delay because the murder itself is not the motive of the crime; rather, its the torturing that the killer enjoys the most. This is especially true in the sadistic killers, the most organized of all killers. This type of killers will keep their victims alive as long as possible sometimes revive them from injuries, keeping them just alive enough to feel the pain from the tortures. The sexual sadistic killers will resources to different equipments, such as electrical wire that they brought with them to the crime site. The most prevalent forms of sexual acts inflicted on the victim, in order of case frequency, are anal rape, forced fellatio, vaginal rape, and foreign object penetration (Vronsky 314). Eventually, when the killer finished with the tortures, he / she proceeds to kill.

The victim can be simply shot with a gun, or stabbed to dead. Once the victim is dead, the killer continued to his / her next phase. The sixth phase is the totem phase. The excitement of the killer is suddenly dropped, and the killer wakes up from his / her fantasy and faced reality. This is when the killer collects his / her victim possession such as clothes, trying to preserve his / her fantasy.

Some serial killers will cut off their victim body parts such as the genital, breast, feet, or head, preserved the parts in a jar and saved for later use when they are daydreaming about their fantasy or masturbating. Some killers will preserve the memory by taking pictures, or videotaping the crime. Some will also consume the victims flesh. All these are done in order for the killer to remind himself / herself that the fantasy is real, and he / she really did fulfill it. The last phase before the serial killers start over again is phase seven, the depression phase. Since the killing is an act of fantasy, when it is over, the killer is left with the feeling of emptiness and hopelessness.

He becomes the victim and remains unfulfilled and unsatisfied (Norris 35). The depression phase can last for days, weeks, or even months, but eventually, the killers will fall back into their fantasies and proceed to the murder again. Regardless of what happens to the killer, the planning for the next murder will continue (Anderson 12). Each time after the murder, the fantasy will become more real and the murder will become more brutal, the cycle continues on and on until the pattern gets interrupted. The killers interruption included getting caught, or simply the killer is burnt out. When the killer is burnt out, he / she withdraw from killing, and possibly commit suicide.

This is one of the reason there are many unsolved serial murder cases. However, the chances are that the killers will not stop killing on his / her own. Serial killing is an addiction, and the killing patterns will continued. In conclusion, serial killer is not a new phenomenon, but dated far back in the history with no record of origination. However, due to the rise in serial homicides, criminologist came up with different ways to classify serial killers for investigative and studying purposes. The FBI organized / disorganized and mixed-category is the basic for classifying serial killers.

But due to its limit in psychological aspect, another type of classification was created by Holmes, Holmes, and De Burger based on the serial killers motives. Dr. Robert Keppel also came up with another classification for serial killers, focusing on sexual killers. His classification proved to be most helpful in identifying possible suspect. Regardless of what type of a serial killer fall into, he / she will still follow the same seven phases of killing patterns. Many experts believes that serial killing is an addiction similar to drug or alcohol.

The killing patterns will continue unless something interrupts it. Since its an addiction, the theory that a serial killer can be burnt-out, and stop the killing is unlikely. Unfortunately, the only apparent way to stop the serial killers from acting out their sadistic fantasies, and murdering innocent victims is to locked them up, and let them live in a box alone with their fantasies.
