Eventually, the fantasies took over the mind of the killer and at this stage, and the killers will seek ways to fulfill their fantasies. The second phase of the patterns is the trolling phase. In this phase, the killer searches for possible victim, usually around the killers neighborhood or close by. There are certain types of victims the killer is searching for, depending on the type of each serial killer.

All these are done in order for the killer to remind himself / herself that the fantasy is real, and he / she really did fulfill it. The last phase before the serial killers start over again is phase seven, the depression phase. Since the killing is an act of fantasy, when it is over, the killer is left with the feeling of emptiness and hopelessness.
He becomes the victim and remains unfulfilled and unsatisfied (Norris 35). The depression phase can last for days, weeks, or even months, but eventually, the killers will fall back into their fantasies and proceed to the murder again. Each time after the murder, the fantasy will become more real and the murder will become more brutal, the cycle continues on and on until the pattern gets interrupted. The FBI organized / disorganized and mixed-category is the basic for classifying serial killers.
But due to its limit in psychological aspect, another type of classification was created by Holmes, Holmes, and De Burger based on the serial killers motives. Dr. Robert Keppel also came up with another classification for serial killers, focusing on sexual killers. His classification proved to be most helpful in identifying possible suspect. Regardless of what type of a serial killer fall into, he / she will still follow the same seven phases of killing patterns. Many experts believes that serial killing is an addiction similar to drug or alcohol.
The killing patterns will continue unless something interrupts it. Since its an addiction, the theory that a serial killer can be burnt-out, and stop the killing is unlikely. Unfortunately, the only apparent way to stop the serial killers from acting out their sadistic fantasies, and murdering innocent victims is to locked them up, and let them live in a box alone with their fantasies.
