Artificial intelligence (AI) is the branch of computer science concerned with programming computers to exhibit intelligent behavior (oxford dictionary). In an age where the threat of warfare is not out of the question it is not surprising that a lot of advances have been made in the field of military AI. With this increased demand for more intelligent, more dependable programs, algorithms, and expert systems to run these robots, it is obvious that the field of robotic studies is very important. Work on AI began in the 1950 's with researchers wanting to use a computer to model the way a human thinks. This new field quickly took off, but had its difficulties due to the inability to produce anything that really resembled human intelligence. Eighteen years ago Marvin Minsky would have been called crazy for stating that AI is the newest and most advance type of technology.
These days, Minsky, and the theory of AI is the most respected field of research. What is intelligence? The best way to try and describe what intelligence is to list some features that we would expect an intelligent being to have. Speech, the ability to make ones own decisions, to have emotions, Etc, these are all characteristics of an intelligent being. Over the years, the ever increasing and expanding research on Artificial Intelligence, particularly in the field of Military defense, has seen the development and implementation of many commercial and industrial applications that utilize the link between the theory of AI and the military.
The advances in the military has seen the development of expert missiles, combat training and highly advanced weaponry. However all these systems hold a great weight on their ability to make a large impact on the increase of world safety. This is why the development of AI and the implementation of human-like qualities has finally been used, to increase the intelligence of a computer to have its own responses. Robotics is the first and probably the most advanced way to harness AI. Generation 5 is the most advanced military based robot to come out of the research on Artificial Intelligence by the military.
Generation 5 stands for the fifth step in the robotic advances. The generation 5 robot has been programmed to speak, have its own personal responses and act accordingly in dangerous circumstances. This, according to Minsky is the largest leap in the history of robotics. No one person, ever before has been able to have a machine generate its own particular responses to a command.
This highly developed technology is just one aspect that makes up a human. The Generation 5 project was designed to decrease the need for humans to engage in ground battle. The heavy chance of invasion or warfare on another country is very common nowadays and there is great demand to lower the casualties that often occur when war is broken out. When talking about artificial intelligence, many scientist say we are trying to make a robot exactly like a human. If we were to make a robot that acted like a human, it is does not solve the problem, as a normal human being could do the same job. This is a problem that has not been able to be surpassed until now.
The military instead focused on increasing the ability above that of a human in warfare. By this I mean that, instead of giving it the ability to procreate or play tennis, it is an expert when it comes to fighting in a war situation. The Generation 5 project has many advanced feature. With the capability of hand to hand warfare, and the ability for long range battle, the Generation 5 project is capable to perform any task in a war situation. The Generation 5 robot also allows for large amounts of camouflage, making it very capable of infiltrating any site. The Generation 5 robot is also capable of making its own decisions in battle e.

The main aim of the project was to make it like a human would react in warfare, in that choices have to be made, one can not just run out and shoot. However with the limited amount of information we have on actually how to make an Artificial human, it is obvious that there will be a vast amount of negatives. Some of these include the fact that there is always that existence of the probability of a wrong decision made by the robot, a malfunction or even the fact of giving vital intelligence away to warring countries. However the positives easily out weigh the negatives.
It is obvious that the theory of AI is one that will keep improving in unexplainable ways. I believe that the major advances of AI will be made in the military, simply because of the great demand on the improvement of safety and combat. Artificial Intelligence is by far the most fascinating advance to come out of robotic research. The thought of one day we could walk down the road and be served lunch by a robotic waiter or have our dog walked by a robotic helper is quite extraordinary. The opportunities are vast in that there is no end to the improvement of AI. Marvin Minsky once stated throw the idea of AI into a bottomless pit of advances, when it comes out the other end thats half of what AI can do.
