Oprah Winfrey Sells Fictional Self Help to Her Viewers Oprah Winfrey has a very loud and authoritative voice when she is addressing someone who is criticizing her. As the producer I would tell her use a strong tone to respond to an article like this. Oprah needs to tell these people that these books inspire and help her. The best example that Oprah can use is herself. Harpo is a fortune five hundred company. Any woman that can start her own empire surely doesnt need self help, but if she feels that it can help her with her own self esteem than it can help other people too.
Oprah needs to tell these critics that they need to sign up for the book club. Maybe reading a few of the books will help them realize that you dont have to use all of the advice that they write in those books but some of it is very useful. I absolutely disagree that self help books are harmful for the women that read them. Some women and even men for that matter need to find reassurance in themselves. Self help books are a way for people open up and live their lives differently then theyve done in the past. Some people dont even know that there are different ways to go about solving their problems.
Many of these books give the reader different avenues to use. I caught an episode of the show wife swap the other night. The show is about two families that swap wives for a week. In the episode I saw two families that were completely opposite.
One family had a home in a very rural area. They had a goat, nine dogs, horses and many other animals running around their house and in their house. The house was very dirty and no one seemed to do anything. They liked to have fun but hated to clean. The other family lived in a suburban neighborhood with a big house. Every Saturday all of the kids and the mom would wake up and clean until the house was spotless.
The two mothers were from different ends of the earth as far as priorities go. The mom who lived with all of the animals didnt have a care in the world. The mom with the spotless house was a workaholic to say the least. After a week of being in the clean house the first mother learned how nice it is to have a house that you can bring guests into. The second mother realized that she needed to take some time for herself once in a while and relax. Without the show these two families might have never realized how much better life can be until you change you everyday routine.
Self help books can do that for you without being on a reality show. There are already an abundance of mens self help books and magazines on the market today. The problems that men worry about are much different then the problems that women worry about. Men worry about the length of their penis and opinions of their peers. Men want to make love while women want to fall in love. I dont know if youve ever checked the inbox on a males email address, but about half of the junk mail is about penis enlargement.

I believe that self help books are a great way for women and men to find new ways to go about their every day business. Change is good and I think that self help books are a great way to learn how to change.
