Dear Mercedes Lackey, You probably get letters from people everyday who say what Im gonna say, but oh well. See, I am a huge fan of your work, and just recently got told to write a LAL (Letters about Literature) for one of my favorite books, and since I didnt feel like writing to the judges on your Dragons Bane Trilogy, I decided I would write my letter as if talking to you. As I said before, we have to write a letter explaining our favorite book, so, to explain the Dragons Bane book, I guess I should tell what made it the best. First, of course, it was written by you, my all time favorite author, and also its fantasy, which is my favorite genre, but it goes deeper than that, too. It deals with the characters, all of them. I can relate to them so well its amazing.

I mean with the main girl, lets say Lila's her name, god, we could be twins, except my ears dont point in the slightest and I dont have green eyes, but thats besides the point. In mind, we are practically one in the same. We both are extremely determined and rebellious at times and quite curious all the time. We also both hold a love for animals that is almost second to nothing else.

And were both tremendously loyal to most of our family. Now, she can mind speak which I cant, and she also has magic abilities, which of course I dont, and Im real, and shes not, but you get the point. In essence we are related I guess is what Im saying. Theres also her older brother, (Ill call him Jeff since I cant remember his name either) the dragon who raised her.

It seems as if Im related to him, too. Hes definitely got a knack with animals, which Ive already said I have. He also is kind, to everyone, and amazingly enough, thats another trait I try (key word here; try) to possess since reading this book. But hes not as close to me as the girl, I have no idea why, except maybe because hes a he, or hes a dragon, or hes not the main character or whatever else differs between them, but he could really be an older brother to me.

Then of course, you cant have a brother without a sister, and you provide one of those, too, one that fits my little sister exactly, actually. See, Jeffs true little sister, Sarah, lets say her name is, is quite frankly spoiled to the bone. Shes to be the new shaman and since she was little, shes always had a superior air about her, something my own little sister acquired somewhere. Throughout the book though, shes always been shadowed by Lila, like my little sister by me, and grows to despise her. She even goes as far as to tell the rest of the dragon pack that Lila's dangerous and should be kicked out immediately.

Now, my sister may not go that far, but wow, thats still her in a nutshell right there, I can completely relate to what Lila's going through. Its these characters that help make this novel my choice book. I mean, the writing is perfect, the genre is my favorite, but I can relate to the people like no other book Ive ever read. But its also changed me, too. Its made me believe that I can make a difference. Its also made me change the way I treat others like I hinted before.

Im kinder, or at least trying to be, and I try to do the things Im expected to do without complaint. Ive become more tolerable than I ever was about differences in people. And the biggest change of all is that this book has also inspired me to become a writer when Im older. By far the best time Ive ever wasted (according to my family) has been reading The Dragons Bane.

Thank you for writing it.
