Rows of M 16 s standing barrel into the dirt, The helmets of men sitting on top. Such scenes form a memorial to the men and women who gave their lives to defend their country. These men and women are well placed, when defined as patriots as patriots. Yet in the eyes of some people, defending your country is only one side of patriotism. General Patton defined patriotism as Not dying for your country, but making the enemy die for his. It is not necessarily the actions that count, but also the motives behind those actions.

A soldier walking onto a battlefield, having to know that at any moment, you could be shot, blown to pieces, or turned into a prisoner of war, never to see those you love and care for again. Being willing to risk everything for your country; that can ultimately be defined as patriotism. Wars cause the loss of many men. Not only is it a loss to a nation, but also even more so to the people associated with those men and women.

Families, parents, husbands, wives, and children, who might never see that person again. People might ask, Youre only one person, what difference can you possibly make? On the other hand, How can you be so willing to throw it all away? It has been proven throughout the centuries that one man can do great things. Individuals going on to gain the support of millions, build empires whether economical or political, and Aid in the technological advances that have and are still taking place.

As for throwing it all away, it could be more properly described as Defending your freedoms. Here in the United States, we have many things that people in foreign countries do not, and we take many of them for granted. Think of the wars this nation has been through, and think of what would have happened if nobody had gone to serve our country when it came time to do so. We might still be a feather in Great Britains hat, paying our daily tribute to Hitler, or serving Allah. Traditionally, whenever a conflict arises many people are willing to volunteer their services, and sometimes their lives to serve their country.

However, there are also those who run around whining, demanding peace, being an annoying useless discouragement to our troops on the battlefield, and back home. Anti-war protesters may claim to be patriotic, that the intent of their activities is merely to use expression of free speech, in other words, they have an opinion and they feel entitled to make it known. But do their actions really fit with a standard definition of patriotism? According to Webster: A patriot is One who loves his country and zealously supports its authority and interests. In addition, patriotism is love and devotion for ones country. It is highly improbable that anti-war demonstrates support for the authority of our government.

I believe that certain anti-war activists tend to cut very close to the opposite of patriotism. People that go around blasting the decisions of our leaders and criticizing the work of our soldiers are a disgrace to our country, and a very big discouragement. It might make our men and women in the armed forces wonder why they are even there, if nobody else supports them in their effort. Even if somebody does not necessarily agree with the war, that does not excuse them for being a negative influence, and a real annoyance. These people also fail to see the benefits that come from war. Indeed, many lives may be lost, but at the same time, it causes nations to advance in a way that they would not outside of a fighting position.

It tends to boost the economy, bringing a revolution to the nations industrial systems. It provides jobs for people who were formerly unemployed. It forces advancements in technology, bringing out developments and inventions that previously, nobody would have even dreamed of. For instance, Nuclear Technology is some of the most powerful technology in existence. It really started to take off during World War 2.

Previously, nobody would have thought of any such thing until powerful weapons actually became necessary. Many advanced surgical techniques have been developed in response to life-threatening battlefield injuries. An army surgeon faced with a patient who has a piece of his thigh blown off must decide whether to amputate or attempt to somehow repair the damage. We now have repair techniques developed in WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam, which are used on trauma victims from accidents, disasters, etc. Military training also instills discipline in the hearts of young men and women, teaching them the values of life, and to stand by those values. Moreover, not only to apply them to life, but to every situation they are approached with.

The cause of Wars is another issue that tends to arise. Many people get involved in the support, or objection to the fighting without really looking into or thinking about what is actually happening, and why it is happening. This seems to be the case especially with people that I described earlier, who run around screaming, We want Peace! Obviously, people are going to be killed on the front line, but that is part of what makes them patriots, and it is also the payment for our freedom. If we are threatened, then we must defend ourselves instead of whining about how we do not like all the violence. War also puts a nation to the test.

It finds out what our leaders, and our people of really made of. If the leaders of our nation are really qualified for the task, then theyll step up to the challenge and do their job, directing the course of our nation, and looking out for our best interests; thats what their job is, thats what they were elected to do. Also, in certain situations, people like to blast our president, and other leaders of our nation because of the things they do or the choices they m...
