Religion in Politics: Two Nations Under God Since the days of our forefathers religion has been the basis on which America was founded on. We use phrases such as, God bless America, one nation under God, and in God we trust. The United States has been described by many as a nation with the soul of a church. Religion is even discussed more in American politics than in any other wealthy nation, and continues to grow in influence over many of todays important issues. So is there really a separation of church and state? Who are those who abuse the use of religion for political gain?

And are these things helping or hurting the country? The separation of church and state has become a very hot topic of discussion over a recent number of years. With stories in the news such as last years presidential election, to the more recent Terri Schiavo case, more and more people are asking the question how much influence does religion have on our government? . If you look at the Terri Schaivos case youll see that many people used religion as their means of deciding on how they felt about the situation. In this instance, there were basically two sides two this issue. First you have the liberals.

Liberals are seen as free thinkers. These are the people who were for the removal of the Terri Schaivos feeding tube. There are many liberals who are religious, but did not feel as if removing the tube was unchristian-like. This is exactly the opposite of the people on the other side of the issue who are referred to as the religious right or conservatives. These people feel that a real Christian would never remove a feeding tube from a person and starve them to death. They felt like this is an act of murder because you are taking someones life, which is a violation of one of the Ten Commandments (thou shall not kill).

Ultimately the ruling in the case was that the feeding tube be removed, which caused an uproar in the religious community. There were many conservative politicians as well as citizens who even after Terri Schaivos death continue to use religion as a tool to fight this right-to-life issue, which will no doubt have an affect on future cases such as these. Even though religion lost this battle with the government, and many people feel like it should never have been brought into this subject, you have to ask yourself should the government be able to intervene with my personal beliefs? Many people, including the President believe that religion should definitely influence the decisions made about our country.

Many of his personal decisions about Americas issues have been based on his faith. This is one of the reasons why he was re-elected, yet many feel he used faith as a means for political gain. People have come to question a President who on one hand has helped to pass laws against stem cell research which he feels is a form of murder, yet on the other hand as the governor of Texas executed over 155 people on death row. Christians say how can you be for one type of murder and not the other? This brings me to my reason of why religion and government do not mix.

You should not use religion to get your way on certain issues. You only mislead people and you also make yourself look like a hypocrite. Another instance in which the President used religion in politics to mislead people is in the Iraq war. Bush claimed that this war was what God wanted him to do, yet many believe that Bush had ulterior motives. In my personal opinion, mixing religion and politics is very dangerous because not only does it divide the country, but it may affect peoples lives more than you think. At a final analysis I think that the more these two subjects are brought together, the further it sets back the country in our own eyes, as well as the worlds.
