Tibet, the roof of the world, is the highest and the most isolated country on earth. Located between China and Nepal, imagine a place tucked safely away from the world, hidden by walls of snow capped mountains, rich with strange beauty and innocence. Tibetans are very confined people, their clothes are plain and simple like ropes but are actually silky and thick, unlike Chinese gowns which are flamboyant. They may have old fetchers but that is because the cold makes them look dry and old, but they are actually very pleasant people. During those days, they did not allow foreigners to enter their country. They were not hiding anything but they believed that foreign people would want to modernize their country, which they were against.
Tibetans want to maintain their culture without changes, like a time capsule. Tibetans believe that walking for a long distance to holy places purifies the bad deeds they have committed; and that the more difficult the journey, the greater the depth of the purification. In 1949, Chairman Moa Tse-Tung was triumphantly proclaimed leader of the new Peoples Republic of China, vowing that the first task of the communist regime, was to reunite the Chinese motherland. He declared that remote kingdom of Tibet was an integral part of Chinese territory and must rejoin the great republic. As the news passed to the ears of the Tibetan government, they replied firmly that The government of Tibet recognizes no foreign sovereign, and we are an Independent Nation and all Chinese officials will be expelled from Tibet, and have a safe and pleasant return to China. The government of Tibet knew that they would have a war against China which they did not intend to for it to happen and in the early 1950 s His Holiness, the 14 th Dalai Lama was called upon to assume full political power of Head of State, when Tibet was threatened by the might of China.
His Holiness, Tennis Gyatso, at the age of 12 was the spiritual and temporal leader of the Tibetan people, was recognised as the reincarnation of his predecessor, the 13 th Dalai Lama, was born in a small village of Takster Northeast of Tibet. His Holiness dreamt that the village of Takster in And including the northern border regions of Tibet was secured by the Chinese killing every man, woman and child. In his dream, images of monks were forced against their own will to point a gun to each others head. It was a real nightmare as when he woke up he started to shed tears and he could not close his eyes, for the fear that the same nightmare would return. At the same moment, he thought that if his people of Tibet were to fight, they would be outnumbered by millions.
So he decided to meet the Chinese General to negotiate. Sculptures of deities have been carved with great care and colours in preparation for the Chinese Generals visit. The flag of China was raised to symbolize the Tibetans open arms as a message that they want peace and harmony. Furthermore, beautiful fields of crops have turned to landing fields to welcome the Generals plane. To welcome the General, the advisors of the of the 13 th Dalai Lama escorted the General to the main street that paved through Lhasa, Bell and Done.
This welcoming gesture represented the Tibetan Buddhism while each advisor held one bell in the left hand and the done in the right. They represented passive and active qualities analogous to the yin and yang concepts of the Chinese tradition; and also the union of wisdom and compassion. As the General was walking into The Panama where the Dalai Lama lived and studied, monks gather around creating the Mandala of Sand which they have been creating for a few months, a religious artwork made of millions of grains and colored sand. The General of China intentionally stepped on it like it was a rug, knowing that it was a symbol of peace. Nevertheless, the Dalai Lama smiled at him, not angry or disappointed as he was trying to maintain peace.
A few hours went by and the General was not impressed. After all the talks on peace, the General returned to China and came back with large amount of troops to defeat the small Tibetan army in a blink of an eye and imposed the so-called "I 7 -Point Agreement for the Peaceful Liberation of Tibet" on the Tibetan government in May I 951. As it was signed under duress, the agreement was void under international law. A minimum of one million Tibetan died as a result of the Chinese occupation of Tibet. The Dalai Lama was conflicted by moral dilemma over encouraging rebellion by his loyal subjects which meant exercising the use of force and in 1959, his Holiness, the Dalai Lama was forced into exile to India with six thousand followers.
In 1989 the 14 th Dalai Lama was offered the Nobel Peace Prize for being an honest man who is both spiritual and temporal head of the Tibet. To date, though still in exile, his Holiness is still spreading the word of peace and harmony to the entire world.
