Laurels is a highly recognized academic honorary club. Ever since I was a freshman, part of my goals were to be part of this club regardless of any circumstances. I was dead set to put my money where my mouth is. And sure enough I am and was in that process. I applied once but unfortunately did not make it.

This is my second time trying out. Despite the fact that I was not initiated on my first try, that did not deprive my pride at all, but instead I am even more determined. The reason being why I want to contribute to this club is because not only by far for its superior recognition, but I want to be part of this commodity. My older sister was part of this club and I will do anything to carry on this tradition. I want to take part with community service; I want to be able to assist with any problems that the students are encountering in school because I have an obvious and sincere concern for others, and last but not least I want to build my self-confidence as well as self-morality through this association. Being myself, I can assure you that I have the potentials and qualities to be qualified for this club.

I am an independent self-starter. I have no trouble working in groups, or interacting with others. I am mature and personable. I also have interest outside of academics. I have been an active member of the Bike and Hike club, Math club, Sophomore and Junior club, and as well as the CSF club. My personality and skills that I have acquired are my highest potentials.

With that, I strongly believe that I am qualified to take part in this honorary club. Encouraging voices ring in my ears as I recollect freshman year. Community service is to do volunteer work, which benefits the community as I have heard form the teachers, faculty members and also from certain clubs. Packed with these inspirational words from all these individuals get involved! All these individuals and organization encouraged me to become involved in both community service and extra curricular activities. I was informed that participating in such events would impress the colleges and universities.

However, from a personal standpoint, I can admit that community service is much more valuable that impressing the Dean of Admissions, in that it increases your knowledge of various fields, improves skills, and prepares me for my life after high school. As a sophomore I quickly became involved with the community by volunteering at the Children Hospital in Los Angeles. The reason why I chose to do community service there was because of my asthma that I acquired when I was younger. Although I merely performed simple tasks such as filing patient information, and addressing envelops, I learned a great deal about the service that the hospital provides. In the area where I worked, people who were unable to afford certain medical needs could call and find out if they qualified for a program that would finance any appointments or procedures that they required. Volunteering in the hospital provided me with knowledge of public services, and I was also able to meet interesting people along the way.

Experiences in community service have helped me learned about different fields, new people, and I have also discovered more about myself. I believe that it is necessary for young people to try to discover who they are by involving themselves in whatever they can, and taking advantage of opportunities. The world is a big place, and we are meant to experience it, so why not begin within the community? With all being said, I feel that Laurels is an appropriate and suitable organization for me and I hope that I can play a part of this academic honorary club.
